  • Authorship in Historical Perspective and Its Bearing on New Testament and Early Christian Texts and Contexts

    Open Access•Pieter J J Botha, Pieter JJ Botha•ARTICLE•Scriptura•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 12

‘Authorship’ in Greco-Roman times must be understood as an interpretive, cultural construct. Writing activities were collective and participatory, and ranged, depending on the location and period, from courtiership to editorial, translation and facilitation work to entertainment to legal practice to education, embedded in pre-print contexts without the judicial and social institution of copyright. Whatever it was that ancient authors did when the…

  • I am writing this with my own hand

    Open Access•Pieter J J Botha•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2009•References: 15

When the New Testament and early Christian writings are considered as situated, culturally mediated and historically functional events, the pitfall of a binary contrast between literacy and orality should be avoided. Focus should be on the physical and experiential aspects of ancient writing. Discussions of posture, education, cost and the amount of time involved in physical writing in Greco-Roman times are concluded by an analysis of the disposi…

  • Assessing representations of the imperial cult in New Testament studies

    Open Access•Pieter J J Botha•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2004•References: 28

A distinct conceptualisation of the imperial cult is common in NT scholarship, in which worship of the emperor is portrayed as a “foreign” development which served primarily political aims, with little integrity and no serious religious significance. This depiction does not do justice to the evidence and is basically ethnocentric. That the imperial cult provides us with a crucial window on the mentality of the Roman Period comes closer to the tru…

  • Young Bodies and Religion

    Pieter J J Botha•ARTICLE•Religion and Theology•2002

In this article possible connections between religious discourse and child abuse are explored. It would be dangerously naive to consider religion as either irrelevant to or as the cure for the problem of child abuse. The assumption of a direct connection between religion and society is criticised, and a plea is made for rethinking and re-evaluating any straightforward claims for religion promoting moral integrity and providing solutions for child…

  • Wat sal hierdie kindjie eendag word?’ Kindwees in die wêreld van Jesus (Deel 2)

    Open Access•Pieter J J Botha•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2000•References: 4

“What will this child become?” Childhood in the world of Jesus (Part 2) This is the second part of an historical investigation into the conditions and experiences of childhood in first century Palestine. Aspects of early childhood, socialisation and education are discussed. The issue, “Jesus and the children” is explored briefly

  • Religious Topoi and South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission

    Pieter J J Botha, Johannes N Vorster•ARTICLE•Religion and Theology•1999

The role of religious language in the activities of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is analysed in this study. The (Christian) religious rhetoric is a limiting factor with regard to the possibilities and/or contribution of the TRC by fashioning a dichotomising discourse and terminology. It also imposes constraints, visible in the TRC's dealings with concepts such as truth, responsibility and causation. This discourse is, furthermore, an a…

  • Laat die kindertjies na My toe kom

    Open Access•Pieter J J Botha•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1999•References: 2

This study is the first part of an historical investigation into the conditions and experiences of childhood in first-century Palestine. Aspects of family life, birth and early childhood are discussed

  • Words, Worlds, Works Making Our Way With New Testament Scholarship1

    Pieter J J Botha•ARTICLE•Religion and Theology•1998

New Testament scholarship attempts rational, sensible understanding of the early Christian literature and its world. It engages in a conversation with the past in order to discover, learn about, and criticise ways of being human. Such understanding implies an extensive knowledge of the many parts of our complex social context and conceptual heritage and then integrates these into the enquiring and religious discourses of today. It has the potenti…

  • Die Menigte rondom Jesus

    Open Access•Pieter J J Botha•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1998

The crowds around Jesus This article is an exercise in historical imagination. By employing an interdisciplinary approach some facets of the appearance and daily experiences of first century Galilean peasants are discussed. The question, how we should picture Jesus’ crowds, thereby becomes a powerful way of opening a window onto the world of the historical Jesus

  • Gelykenisse in konteks

    Open Access•Pieter J J Botha•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1996

Parables in conte:d: some comments on Matthew 24:45-25:30 The three parables in Matthew 24:45-25:30 are usually read as advice to the church on how to behave while waiting for the return of the Lord. An alternative reading is proposed in this article: Matthew discusses the relationship between various Jewish groups, explaining who the disciples of the Kingdom are and why fonnative Judaism, competing for the allegiance of Jews of the late first ce…

  • Jesus the Jew

    Pieter J J Botha•ARTICLE•Religion and Theology•1994

In this article attention is drawn to the emphasis on Jesus' Jewishness in current historical Jesus studies. Some of the findings of this research are briefly presented. Three reasons for this development are identified: the resurgence in historical Jesus studies, the re-evaluation of early Judaism by scholarship, and contemporary doubts about Christology. The Jewishness of Jesus confronts us with many challenges and new problems and some are ide…

  • Mark’s story as oral traditional literature

    Open Access•Pieter J J Botha•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•1991•References: 13

The interpretation of Mark’s gospel is inextricably linked to a conception of the gospel’s genesis. By basing his argument on an aspect of the ‘oral formulaic theory’ the author of this paper argues that Mark’s gospel can be seen as an example of oral traditional composition. The primary asset of this perspective is that it provides an alternative to the tradition-redaction stalemate, current in Marcan studies. Some general implications are brief…
