Curious Travellers
This short concluding chapter reflects on the work of an ongoing collaborative academic project focused on the C18th home tour. Curious Travellers could be described as a ‘crucible’ project—a space in which different media, different perspectives, and different research skills combine and collide. Currently funded by the AHRC, it is a digital humanities project involving TEI tagging and crowd-sourcing, but its foundation is archival research into…

Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in Europe
This encyclopedia documents the presence and impact of nationalized cultural consciousness in European nationalism. It tracks how intellectuals, historians, philologists, novelists, poets, painters, folklorists, and composers, in an intensely collaborative transnational network, articulated the national identities and aspirations that would go on to determine European history and politics, with effects that are still felt today. Edited by Joep Le…

Impertinent structures”
This essay examines a series of unpublished letters written by a young Breton viscount, Hersart de La Villemarqué, during a tour of south Wales and south-west England in the autumn and winter of 1838–1839. La Villemarqué was part of a delegation invited by the Abergavenny Cymreigyddion Society, and his visit brought him into close contact with some of the leading lights of the Welsh cultural revival. Though frequently naïve and with a tendency to…

Beauty Spot, Blind Spot
Romantic‐period Wales was a fascinating place: part literary construct, part tourist destination, it appears in the work of many writers as a locus of alternative possibilities, both political and personal. Welsh landscape, language and literature attracted poets, artists, antiquarians and historians alike, and an energetic literary cultural revival within Wales produced a rich blend of texts, legends and fabrications which would inspire makers o…
