  • Changes in mineralogy of loess–paleosol sections across the Chinese Loess Plateau

Open Access•Gi Young Jeong, Stephen Hillier et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

Quantitative mineralogical analysis of bulk samples and single particles was carried out on three loess sections of different local climate settings on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). Mineralogy, geochemistry, and single-particle petrography of loess and paleosols are relatively uniform over the CLP. However, in detail, there are mineralogical changes related to eolian process and chemical weathering. Particle-size sorting eastward from western …

  • Late Quaternary paleosols, stratigraphy and landscape evolution in the Northern Pampa, Argentina

    Open Access•Rob A Kemp, Marcelo Zárate et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

The field properties, micromorphology, grain-size, geochemistry, and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages of two late Quaternary sections have been used to reconstruct the sequence of pedosedimentary processes and to provide insights into landscape evolution in part of the Northern Pampa of Argentina. Paleosols developed in paludal sediments adjacent to the Paraná river at Baradero and in loess at Lozada can both be correlated and linked …

  • Testing the sustainability and sensitivity to climatic change of terrace agricultural systems in the Peruvian Andes

  • Excavations at the Lower Palaeolithic site at Elveden, Suffolk, UK

Open Access•Nick Ashton, Simon Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2005•Cited by: 49•References: 13

The Lower Palaeolithic site at Elveden, Suffolk, was the subject of new excavations from 1995–1999. Excavations around the edge and in the centre of the former clay-pit revealed sediments infilling a lake basin that had formed in Lowestoft till, overlying Chalk, the till being attributed to the Anglian glaciation (MIS 12). The lake sediments contain pollen that can be assigned to pollen zones HoI and HoIIa of the early Hoxnian (MIS 11). Overlying…

  • Geochemical characterization, correlation, and optical dating of tephra in alluvial sequences of central western Argentina

    Open Access•Phillip Toms, Phillip S Toms et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2004

The synthesis of paleoclimatic archives provided by loess and alluvial sequences of central Argentina has been hindered by the lack of a cohesive lithostratigraphic framework extending across the Chaco–Pampean plains and catchments of the Rios Desaguadero, Colorado, and Negro. This condition originates in part from the dearth of absolute chronological controls. The occurrence of discrete tephra layers across this region may provide an opportunity…

  • Identification of Disseminated Trego Hot Springs Tephra in the Palouse, Washington State

    Open Access•Matthew King, Alan J Busacca et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

Tephra layers form important chronostratigraphic marker horizons within the Wisconsinan loess-paleosol stratigraphy of the Palouse, Washington State. This paper details the presence of disseminated glass shards of the Trego Hot Springs tephra that has not previously been recognized within the Palouse or environs. The tephra provides additional chronological control for the regional Late Wisconsinan stratigraphy and raises the possibility of corre…

  • Pedosedimentary and palaeoenvironmental significance of a Holocene alluvial sequence in the southern Pampas, Argentina

    Open Access•Marcelo Zárate, Rob A Kemp et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2000•Cited by: 6•References: 3

A representative section of the Holocene alluvial record of the southern Pampas (Argentina) com prises a sequence of clastic sediments, a diatomite and two palaeosols. Detailed macro- and micromorphological descriptions provide the basis for the reconstruction of its pedosedimentary history. Combining the pedosedi mentary reconstruction with palaeoecological data allows a detailed overview of alluvial landscape development and associated palaeoen…

  • Pedosedimentary Reconstruction of a Thick Loess-Paleosol Sequence near Lanzhou in North-Central China

    Open Access•Rob A Kemp, Edward Derbyshire et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

A 38-m well section near Lanzhou at the semiarid western margin of the Loess Plateau, China, contained a continuous, high-resolution loess-paleosol sequence spanning the last 130,000 yr. Depth functions of micromorphological features, magnetic susceptibility, calcium carbonate, organic carbon, and median grain size provide the basis for pedosedimentary and associated paleoenvironmental reconstructions of three paleosol complexes (S1, Sm, and S0).…
