  • Imaging Hadrian in Britain between Coinage and Sculpture

Open Access•Dario Calomino, Francesca Bologna et al.•ARTICLE•Britannia•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper presents a new approach to an old problem, the provincial reception of the image of Roman emperors. Applying 3D computer modelling, we captured the portrait features of Hadrian as represented on coinage minted for the British province, produced a 3D model from a coin and compared it with the bronze head of Hadrian found in London. The aim was to test the possibility, previously posited by other scholars, that the London portrait might …

  • Britain In or Out of Europe During the Late Mesolithic? A New Perspective of the Mesolithic–Neolithic Transition

    Open Access•Tom Lawrence, Mike Donnelly et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Lacking well-dated fifth millennium Mesolithic evidence and based on a consensus that late Mesolithic Britain was isolated from the continent, discussion of the Mesolithic–Neolithic transition has focused on the centuries around 4000 BC. This discourse has over-simplified complex neolithisation processes. New, high-quality evidence from 460,000 lithics found at Bexhill, Sussex, SE England, helps to redress this. Here, well-dated Mesolithic microl…

  • A Late Iron Age/early Roman Enclosed Settlement at Basing View, Basingstoke

Martyn Allen, John Boothroyd et al.•ARTICLE•Hampshire Studies•2020

Excavation in advance of housing development at Basing View, Basingstoke, revealed the remains of an Early Roman enclosed settlement that possibly originated in the Late Iron Age and was occupied to the early 2nd century. The settlement was fairly low status, focussed on mixed farming practices, but was notable for the presence of a possible sunken- featured building with a baby burial. The site adds to current knowledge of the Late Iron Age/Earl…

  • Load and academic attainment in two business schools

Mike Donnelly, Darcy McCormack et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2007

In this paper the relationship between academic load (the number of modules attempted) and academic performance is investigated in a Scottish and an Australian university. An engagement approach to academic integration is employed, in which there is feedback between load and performance, and in which there is scope for diminishing returns to the study of additional modules once loads become high. The results indicate that full-time students reduc…

  • Excavations of an Early Historic settlement within a multi-period landscape at Dolphinton, South Lanarkshire

Open Access•Murray Cook, Anne Crone et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Archaeological Journal•2002

Prior to the extraction of gravel at Haughhead Farm, Garvald Quarry, Dolphinton, South Lanarkshire, AOC Archaeology excavated an extensive series of complex but shallow negative features, as well as unstratified finds ranging in date from the Mesolithic to the Early Historic period. The majority of the features identified relate to rural settlement belonging to the middle of the first millennium AD

  • Excavations on the Leven, Loudoun Hill, Ayrshire, 1993

Open Access•John Atkinson, John A Atkinson et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Archaeological Journal•2000

Rescue excavations at Loudoun Hill Quarry revealed the remains of timber structures, defined as pits and postholes in the subsoil. A primary phase of activity was represented by two pits which are tentatively dated to the early Neolithic period by association with artefactual and botanical evidence. The second phase of occupation at the site was represented by the construction of a double palisaded enclosure. A third phase of activity is postulat…
