John Collins and the Double Horizontal Dial
On his admission to the Royal Society in 1667, John Collins presented to it, and described, an example of Henry Sutton's double horizontal dial with additions by himself. His description given on that occasion is here transcribed with some commentary both on the dial itself and on Collins’ involvement with it
Recycling Early Modern Mathematical Instruments
Examples are given of how old instruments were recycled in the Early-Modern period in consequence of the difficulty and cost of obtaining brass suitable for instrument-making. Details of this practice are illustrated from two astrolabes by Jean Fusoris, one of which, described here, is a new addition to the corpus of his work
Scientific Instruments between East and West
Scientific Instruments between East and West is a collection of essays on aspects of the transmission of knowledge about scientific instruments and the trade in such instruments between the Eastern and Western worlds, particularly from Europe to the Ottoman Empire. The contributors, from a variety of countries, draw on original Arabic and Ottoman Turkish manuscripts and other archival sources and publications dating from the fifteenth to the twen…
The Eclipse of the Sun
The Sun, in the early seventeenth century was, as it always had been, the ultimate arbiter of time-measurement In the last quarter of the century however this role was called into question as the new precision of post-Huygenian clocks revealed that natural time and the artificial mean time of the clock were not the same. Initially the question was little understood by the general public. The paper examines some early attempts to explain why "Sun-…

An interrupted story
Although consistently recognized as desirable by both the Royal Society and the Académie des Sciences, translations of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society were only infrequently undertaken officially. More successful were some private attempts, which by the end of the eighteenth century had produced a virtually complete translation, albeit only of Lowthorp's abridgements

The Musée d'Histoire des Sciences, Geneva Mathematics, light, and Pompeian delight
The City of Geneva can be proud to have a jewel in the crown of science museums which is here described. Housed in a nineteenth century palace built in the Palladian style, the Villa Bartholoni, it displays a splendid collection of astronomical and other scientific instruments. Particularly noteworthy, as only appropriate for Geneva, is its connection with the family of de Saussure, recalling the famous eighteenth century physicist, alpinist, and…

From Mathematical Practice to the History of Science
scientific instruments have been systematically collected as attractive and interesting objects from the past, and as tangible evidence for the development of science in the present century. They have, however, a long pre-history of being collected and a first aim of this paper is to identify the contexts in which this occured. A second aim is to Sketch out the ways in which collecting instruments changed between the sixteenth and the twentieth c…

Pierre Gassendi Astronomer and Natural Philosopher
The four-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Pierre Gassendi occurred in 1992. Gassendi is well known as a philosopher, the refounder in Europe of Epicurean atomism, and as an important – though unacknowledged – influence on Locke and the beginning of British empiricism. Far less well known is Gassendi's work as an empirical scientist. One of the leading practical astronomers in Europe of his time, and a careful, precise observer of nature, Gas…

Further Documents Concerning Jacques Vaucanson and the Collections of the Hotel De Mortagne
A newly discovered dossier of thirty-six documents augments our knowledge of the collections of the noted mechanician Jacques Vaucanson from the time of his death until 1796 when they were joined to those of the new Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers (founded 1794). The contents of this dossier are summarized in order and the paper concludes with some general remarks on technical museums.
