  • Holocene woodland history of the Sierra de Ayllón (central Spain)

    Open Access•Mercedes García‐Antón, Mercedes García-Antón et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2020•References: 3

  • Vegetation and fire history since the last glacial maximum in an inland area of the western Mediterranean Basin (Northern Iberian Plateau, NW Spain)

    Open Access•César Morales-Molino, César Morales‐molino et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

We reconstructed vegetation responses to climate oscillations, fire and human activities since the last glacial maximum in inland NW Iberia, where previous paleoecological research is scarce. Extremely sparse and open vegetation composed of steppic grasslands and heathlands with scattered pioneer trees suggests very cold and dry conditions during the Oldest Dryas, unsuitable for tree survival in the surroundings of the study site. Slight woodland…

  • Vegetation and environmental conditions in the Doñana Natural Park coastal area (SW Iberia) at the beginning of the last glacial cycle

Open Access•César Morales‐molino, José María Postigo Mijarra et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

Detailed reconstructions of the vegetation of Iberia during the last glacial inception are rare due to the limited number of terrestrial sites recording this period. Active retreat of El Asperillo cliff, located on the Atlantic coast of southwestern Iberia, has exposed a fossil organic level dating back to one of the early stades of the last glacial cycle. Pollen and macrofossil analyses from this site show that the Doñana area was covered mainly…

  • Long-term persistence of Mediterranean pine forests in the Duero Basin (central Spain) during the Holocene

    Open Access•César Morales‐molino, José María Postigo Mijarra et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 11

In the southern Duero Basin of central Spain, there are vast areas of aeolian sand sheets and dune fields. A comprehensive survey of the sand quarries in this area identified a number of palaeosols in sedimentary sequences. The identification and AMS radiocarbon dating of soil charcoal fragments collected in these palaeosols indicate the persistence of Pinus pinaster in this area throughout most of the Holocene. Although potential natural vegetat…

  • Negative responses of highland pines to anthropogenic activities in inland Spain

Open Access•Juan Manuel Rubiales Jiménez, Juan M Rubiales et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 10

  • Steppes, savannahs, forests and phytodiversity reservoirs during the Pleistocene in the Iberian Peninsula

    Open Access•Penélope González‐Sampériz, Penélope González-Sampériz et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Palaeobotany and…•2010

  • Quaternary pollen analysis in the Iberian Peninsula

    Open Access•José S Carrión, Sara Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2009•Cited by: 2

Most unsuccessful palynological work is never published. As a consequence, pollen analysts waste time re-processing sterile sediments, and the available literature exhibits a uniformly positive record of success in pollen extraction. Here we report failures with Quaternary pollen analyses in the Iberian Peninsula; that is, case studies where it was not possible to extract palynomorphs for pollen counting. Both totally sterile and partially steril…

  • Ancient pine forest on inland dunes in the Spanish northern meseta

    Open Access•Fátima Franco Múgica, Fátima Franco-Múgica et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

We present a new stratigraphic (pollen and nonpollen microfossils and charcoal particle) sequence with five AMS dates, covering about the last 9000 yr, of a core collected from the Spanish northern meseta, one of the territories of the Iberian Peninsula for which little paleobotanical information is available. The results support the hypothesis of the permanence of the pine forests, in more or less pure masses or large timber stands, during the H…
