Queering mainstream media
Many gender-queering individuals and representations are policed by the mainstream media to such an extent that they become complicit in the re-inscription of a hetero-normative gender system. There are, however, some exceptions. The performance of Matsuko Deluxe – one of the most popular male-to-female cross-dressing figures in Japan – represents a rare challenge to the mainstream media’s policing process by exposing and making a mockery of its …
Representational Appropriation and the Autonomy of Desire in Yaoi/BL
Boys Love Manga and Beyond
Boys Love (or simply BL) has emerged as a mainstream genre in manga, anime, and games for girls and young women. This genre was first developed in Japan in the early 1970s by a group of female artists. By the late 1970s, many amateur women fans were getting involved and creating and self-publishing homoerotic parodies of established male manga characters and popular media figures. The popularity of these encouraged a surge in the number of commer…
Sexual minority studies on Japan
This chapter provides an overview of sexual minority studies on Japan conducted both in Japanese and English, across the last two decades or so. There have been numerous works published by both academics and non-academics who have attempted to critique heteronormative understandings of Japan’s culture and society. The rise of ‘transgender’ as an identity category since the 1990s opened up a new horizon for the Japanese perception of people who tr…
Transnational boys' love fan studies
Editorial overview of "Transnational Boys' Love Fan Studies," edited by Kazumi Nagaike and Katsuhiko Suganuma, special issue, Transformative Works and Cultures, no. 12 (2013)
Contact Moments
This book sheds light on 'contact moments' between Japanese male-queer culture and that of the West in the postwar period, and critiques various contemporary examples of persistent Orientalism and nativism. Focusing on a range of Japanese as well as English male-queer materials including magazines, memoirs and cybertexts, Suganuma shows how the interactions of the two cultures affected the subject formation process of queer selves. The instances …
Ways of Speaking about Queer Space in Tokyo
The city of Tokyo has been a space where numerous forms of sexual subcultures and their histories have been born. This paper discusses one possible way of understanding queer space in Tokyo. Examining the discourses concerning Shinjuku Ni-chōme, a queer neighbourhood in Tokyo, I argue that this queer space functions as a discursive site of containment as well as resistance to hetero-normative narratives of the metropolis. Drawing on queer theorie…
Sexual minorities and human rights in Japan
Contemporary Japan maintains longstanding and well-documented traditions of same-sex eroticism and yet the terminology for describing these traditions as well as the contexts and identities through which they have been expressed have changed greatly since Japan's opening to the West at the end of the nineteenth century. These changes have been most striking in the post-war period, when new rights-centred discourses concerning issues of sexual ide…
Queer Voices from Japan
Queer Voices from Japan examines the wide range of queer voices in Japan, and the longevity that these minority communities have enjoyed in society. Mark McLelland, Katsuhiko Suganuma, and James Welker bring together historical and contemporary narratives that contribute to the study of sexual identities in Japan. These essays trace the evolution of queer voices in Japan with analyses of the presence of homosexuality in the Japanese Imperial Army…
Associative identity politics
This paper discusses one way to articulate queer male identity politics in 1990s Japanthrough Fran Martins conceptualization of the mask (Martin 2003). By comparatively examiningtwo key Japanese gay coming-out narratives, the paper shows how a reading of queer subject formationin the decade through a metaphor of masking can shed light on the complex scenarios functioning beneath the surface of identity politics. I argue that the notion of masking…
