  • Technological and Protein Residue Analysis on Ancient Stemmed Projectile Points of the Southern Andes Highlands

    R Loyola, Patricio López-Mendoza et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 42

We present the results of technological and protein residue analyses of the lithic assemblages recovered at the Pedernales-38 site (26.5°S; 69°W), located in the highlands of the southern Andes (3380 masl). Based on a reconstruction of the operational chains and the differential representation of their phases, we suggest that the final production, use, maintenance, and discard of large stemmed projectile points occurred at the site. Of the assemb…

  • New insights into early paleoindian (Gainey) associations with proboscideans and canids in the niagara peninsula, southern ontario, canada

    Open Access•Ronald F Williamson, Peter L Storck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•References: 22

This paper presents the results of protein residue and use-wear analyses on stone tools recovered during complete salvage excavations of the Mt. Albion West archaeological site, located in the Niagara Peninsula of Southern Ontario, Canada. Mt. Albion West is an Early Paleoindian (Gainey) locality that yielded evidence of four activity foci and dozens of Early Paleoindian stone tools including one complete and several partial fluted bifaces. Organ…

  • A Flaked Stone Crescent from a Stratified, Radiocarbon-Dated Site in the Northern Great Basin

    Open Access•Geoffrey M Smith, Donald D Pattee et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•2014•Cited by: 12•References: 7

Seven sites in the Far West have produced crescents in dated contexts: of these, only two are in the Great Basin. Single dates from both Great Basin sites—the Sunshine Locality and Fort Rock Cave—suggest that crescents date to the terminal Pleistocene. Crescents from dated contexts in California suggest that they were also used during the early Holocene. We report the discovery of a crescent from a stratified, radiocarbon-dated rockshelter in sou…

    Open Access•T L Jones, Richard T Fitzgerald et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2002•Cited by: 29•References: 38

Recent excavations at the Cross Creek site (CA-SLO-1797) on the central coast of California revealed a stratigraphically discrete midden component dating between ca. 8350 and 7700 cal B.C., making it the oldest mainland shell midden on the west coast of North America. A large recovery volume revealed an assemblage dominated by grinding implements (handstones and milling slabs) and crude core and flake tools typical of California's Milling Stone h…

  • Mckean Lithic Technology at Lightning Spring

    Jame D Keyser, John L Fagan et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 1

During the 1980 excavation of the Lightning Spring site in the North Cave Hills of South Dakota, a group of Tongue River silicified sediment bifaces was discovered in one of the deeper McKean levels of the site. In addition to these bifaces, a large suite of Duncan projectile points was recovered from the four McKean occupations. The seven bifaces provide significant insight into the McKean phase lithic technological system used in this area of t…

Archaeological work at the .East Short Pines (ESP) site in Harding County, South Dakota, is the first intensive effort to study procurement and processing operations for Tongue River Silicified Sediment (TASS). Investigations at the site show a source area of TASS and an associated workshop with large quantities of lithic debris and numerous firepits. Analysis of debitage, rejected quarry blanks, hammerstones, and pits used for annealing raw TASS…

  • Fluting the Lindenmeier Folsom

    K Akerman, John L Fagan et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•1986•Cited by: 5•References: 1

A simple fluting technique is presented in this paper which improves the success rate for the experimental production of fluted points. Fifty Folsom points were fluted by indirect percussion with the aid of wooden and antler stabilizing tabs resulting in an 84% success rate, a marked improvement over Flenniken's previous experiments replicating Lindenmeier Folsom points. Such results achieved by moderately experienced knappers suggest that more e…

  • A Supposed Fluted Point from Fort Rock Cave, an Error of Identification, and Its Consequences

    Open Access•John L Fagan, John Fagan•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1975•Cited by: 1

The erroneous identification of a fluted projectile point associated with the earliest radiocarbon date at Fort Rock Cave is noted. Contrary to what has been stated in the literature, no fluted or Folsom-like projectile points have been found associated with early radiocarbon dates at Fort Rock Cave
