Mersenne as Translator and Interpreter of the Works of Galileo John Lewis (bio) At the height of his reputation, Marin Mersenne (1588-1648) sent Galileo three complimentary letters: all three went unanswered (or at least no replies are extant). When Galileo wrote to his Swiss colleague and supporter Elia Diodati, he excused himself for not replying to Mersenne with the rather limp excuse that he found Mersenne's handwriting too hard to read.1 It …
Rabelais and the reception of the ‘art’ of Ramón Lull in early sixteenth-century France
In the celebrated letter from father to son in Pantagruel (1531), Rabelais urges the student giant to ignore the claims of judicial astrology and the Art of Ramón Lull as an ‘abuse and vanity’. Excavations at the former Lauder Technical College, Dunfermline
Excavations revealed a stretch of precinct wall of Dunfermline Abbey -- probably fourteenth-century in date. A medieval corn-drying kiln and a probable nineteenth-century loom stance were also located. There are details of `The pottery' by Robert Will & George Haggarty (1034--6), `Clay tobacco pipes' by Dennis B Gallagher (1036--7), and `Palaeoenvironmental analyses' by Tim Holden, Dorothy Rankin & Alan Duffy (1037--9)

The 7-item short-form of the Francis Scale of Attitude Toward Christianity (Adult) was given to four groups of undergraduate students, 378 in the UK, 212 in the USA, 255 in Australia, and 231 in Canada. Analysis supports the reliability and validity of the scale and commends it for further use
