  • Unfolding the Screen

    Marco Musillo•ARTICLE•Winterthur Portfolio•2025

Studying the history of American design and furniture from the lens of Asian aesthetics is a complex area of study because the objects and their living spaces can only be understood by tracing their connections to often invisible cultural dialogues and practices. Within such a dense framework, this article examines one ubiquitous furniture form: the movable screen. From the earliest surviving screens in China, dating to the eighth century, to exa…

  • Impossible Stillness

    Marco Musillo•ARTICLE•Third Text•2023

In exploring displays in European and North-American museums with regards to Chinese arts, this article discusses how cultural hierarchies from Western hegemonies structure the concept of global art. Here the main focus is on the Meat-Shaped-Stone, carved in Beijing during the late Qing dynasty, and on its travelling trajectory through the international stage. • Reconciling Two Careers

    Marco Musillo•ARTICLE•Eighteenth-Century Studies•2008

This essay explores the dual nature of Giuseppe Castiglione's career. As a professional trained artist and Lay Brother, from 1715 to 1766 Castiglione was deployed through the Jesuit Order in the Qing workshops. My analysis of Castiglione's unique career is based predominantly on an unpublished manuscript source, the Jesuit posthumous memoir of the artist, today in the main archive of the Order in Rome. The memoir describes Castiglione's professio…
