  • Multi-proxy reconstruction of climate changes in the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary, Canada, during the Middle and Late-Holocene

    Open Access•Xiner Wu, Mathieu Lemay-Tougas et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•References: 8

The micropaleontological and palynological content, and geochemical and isotopic composition of a marine sediment core collected off Pointe-des-Monts in eastern Québec, Canada, reveal regional palaeoclimatic and paleoceanographic conditions in the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary over the last ~8200 years. The pollen and spore content allows comparison with the terrestrial palynostratigraphy, whereas dinoflagellate cysts and benthic foraminifera are us…

  • Diachronous evolution of sea surface conditions in the Labrador Sea and Baffin Bay since the last deglaciation

    Open Access•Olivia Gibb, Olivia T Gibb et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•References: 24

Assessing changes in sea surface conditions due to the effects of past freshwater outflow through Baffin Bay and Davis Strait to the Labrador Sea, hereafter referred to as the Baffin Bay corridor, is relevant in understanding the variability in Labrador Sea Water (LSW) formation. Here, regional changes in oceanographic circulation and sea surface conditions are reconstructed based on organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) assemblages from …

  • MIS 5e at San Giovanni di Sinis (Sardinia, Italy)

Open Access•Salvatore Carboni, Luciano Lecca et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2014

The most representative Late Pleistocene (“Tyrrhenian”) outcrop in Sardinia (San Giovanni di Sinis) was re-visited based on detailed sedimentological and stratigraphical analysis supported by U-series dating of fossil corals. The stratigraphy shows shoreface–backshore sandstones overlying an erosional surface cut on vertebrate-bearing layers. Facies analysis and sequence-stratigraphic approaches suggest “eustatic” changes during the overall depos…

  • Paleoceanographic changes in the Disko Bugt area, West Greenland, during the Holocene

    Open Access•Marie‐Michèle Ouellet‐Bernier, Marie-Michèle Ouellet-Bernier et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 19

Micropaleontological analyses of a sediment core raised in Disko Bugt (West of Greenland) were undertaken in order to document paleoceanographical changes in the eastern Baffin Bay during the Holocene. The modern analogue technique (MAT) applied to dinocyst assemblages provided information on paleo-sea-surface conditions, whereas isotopic analyses of benthic foraminifers aimed at documenting the ‘deep’ water mass occupying the site. During the ea…

  • Paleoceanographic changes and calcium carbonate dissolution in the central Fram Strait during the last 20 ka

    Open Access•Katarzyna Zamelczyk, Tine L Rasmussen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

A deep-sea sediment core covering the last 20 ka and located between the Polar and the Arctic fronts in the marginal ice zone (MIZ) of the central Fram Strait has been investigated for changes in paleoceanography and calcium carbonate preservation. The reconstruction is based on the distribution patterns of planktic foraminifera, mean shell weight and the degree of fragmentation of their shells, stable isotopes and other geochemical and sedimento…

  • Pb chronology and trace metal geochemistry at Los Tuxtlas, Mexico, as evidenced by a sedimentary record from the Lago Verde crater lake

    Open Access•Ana Carolina Ruiz-Fernández, Claude Hillaire-Marcel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

Lago Verde is a fresh-water maar found on the lower slopes of San Martin volcano, at the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas, Mexico, currently the northernmost remnant of the tropical rain forest in America. 210 Pb and 137 Cs analyzed in a sediment core were used to reconstruct the historical fluxes of Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb, Hg and Zn to the site during the last ∼ 150 yr. The 210 Pb xs -derived sediment accumulation rates, the magnetic susceptibility, C/N ratios and…

  • Forcing of the cold event of 8,200 years ago by catastrophic drainage of Laurentide lakes

    Open Access•Donald C Barber, A S Dyke et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•1999

  • U-Series Dating by the Tims Technique of Land Snails from Paleosols in the Canary Islands

    Open Access•Claude Hillaire-Marcel, Claude Hillaire‐Marcel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

A sequence of seven superimposed paleosols developed on eolian calcarenites and alluvium was sampled on the island of Lanzarote in order to examine the possibility of dating land snail shells by the U-series method, using a TIMS technique allowing measurement of U and Th isotopes in very small samples. In the lower six units, the fossil shells yielded D-allo/L-isoleucine (A/I) ratios of about 0.5 and apparent AMS 14 C ages ranging from 41,000 to …

  • Late Quaternary Biomass Changes from 13 C Measurements in a Highland Peatbog from Equatorial Africa (Burundi)

    Open Access•Anne-Marie Aucour, Claude Hillaire-Marcel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

Stable carbon isotope ratios of total organic matter were measured in two cores collected from the Kashiru peatbog in Burundi, Equatorial Africa. The record, which spans at least the last 40,000 yr, documents the C 3 -C 4 biomass balance in the organic sediment. Among the major modern peat formers, most plants are C 3 species and are characterized by δ 13 C values of -25.5 ± 2.3% (vs PDB). The C 4 plants, which are characterized by higher δ 13 C …

  • Chronology and paleohydrology of late Quaternary high lake levels in the Manyara basin (Tanzania) from isotopic data (18O, 13C, 14C, ) on fossil stromatolites

    Open Access•Joël Casanova, Claude Hillaire-Marcel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1992

Superimposed phases of stromatolite buildup are observed on the eastern margin of Lake Manyara and depict a paleoshoreline at about 20 m above modern lake level. Radiocarbon and ThU measurements permitted the dating of the last two phases of stromatolite formation at ca. 90,000 yr and between 27,000 and 23,000 yr B.P., respectively. The ThU chronology is based on the decay of a strong 230Th-excess (over 234U) inherited with the detrital particles…

  • Paleoenvironments of the last interglacial in northwest north atlantic region and adjacent mainland Canada

Open Access•Anne De Vernal, Gifford H Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1991

  • The Late Pleistocene Laurentide Glacier

    Open Access•Claude Hillaire-Marcel, Claude Hillaire‐Marcel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1989

Direct information on the isotopic composition and timing of the now-vanished Laurentide glacier can be found in subglacial calcite or in early diagenetic concretions from glaciolacustrine deposits. Th/U isotopic measurements on early diagenetic concretions frome Lake Deschaillons varves (St. Lawrence Lowland, Québec) date the early Wisconsinan major ice advance at ca. 80,000 yr (isotopic stage 5a/4 transition). Significant retreat occurred at ca…

  • C and Th/U Dating of Pleistocene and Holocene Stromatolites from East African Paleolakes

    Open Access•Claude Hillaire-Marcel, Claude Hillaire‐Marcel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1986

During recent humid episodes, stromatolites were built along paleolake margins, some 60 m above the modern water level of Lakes Natron and Magadi (southern Gregory Rift Valley). Three generations of stromatolites are observed, the more recent ones frequently covering pebbles and boulders eroded from the older ones. The youngest one yielded 14 C ages ranging from approximately 12,000 to 10,000 yr B.P. Their δ 13 C values (≥2.6%) suggest isotopic e…

  • Radiocarbon Chronology of Holocene Hydrologic Changes in Northeastern Mali

    Open Access•Claude Hillaire‐Marcel, C Hillaire-Marcel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1983

A detailed chronology of hydrological changes that occurred in northeastern Mali during the Holocene is based on approximately 30 14 C dates of molluscs which were collected from the lacustrine and paludal deposits of the Ine Sakane sand sea. The presence of cemented paleodunes indicates that the end of the Pleistocene was and arid period. This was followed by an early Holocene lacustrine episode (ca. 9500–6500 yr B.P.) during which numerous lake…
