  • Westminster Abbey

    Kevin Blockley•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•2004

Conservation of the Cosmati pavement in Westminster Abbey included the compilation of a record of remains first revealed in 1868–70. Study of these showed two phases of building dating to the mid-eleventh century and the reconstruction of the Abbey in the mid-thirteenth century. Parts of the plan of the mid-eleventh-century eastern end and the presbytery were recovered, including details of the pier bases. A reconstruction of the profiles show th…

  • Excavation and Building Recording at Lambeth Palace Chapel Undercroft 1999–2000

Kevin Blockley, Paul Courtney et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•2003

Excavations in the courtyard at the east end of Lambeth Palace chapel, and standing fabric recording of the east elevation of the chapel and its undercroft revealed a sequence of structures. The earliest foundations, incorporating the lower levels of the chapel undercroft, probably date to 1199–1200 when the building of a Premonstratensian house of canons was started under Archbishop Hubert Walter. The remainder of the undercroft and the chapel a…

  • The Vicars' Hall, St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, Berkshire

    Kevin Blockley•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•2000

The Vicars' Hall at Windsor Castle has had a varied history. Recent excavation in the undercroft and recording of the standing fabric has now enabled its story to be firmly established. The curtain wall in this area of the lower ward, and an adjacent building discovered in the excavations, were probably built in the reign of Henry III between 1227 and 1230. The Vicars' Hall with its undercroft was built c. 1415–16 in the reign of Henry V and surv…

  • Oxwich Castle, Gower

    Kevin Blockley•ARTICLE•Post-Medieval Archaeology•1997

Excavations within the courtyard of Oxwich Castle on the Gower peninsula located traces of the 14th-century castle, and the foundations of subsequent structures built within the courtyard dating from the 16th to 20th century. These have been related to the in situ remains of the castle which comprise two buildings, each representing distinctive building campaigns by two generations of the Mansell family during the 16th century

  • A Brief Survey on the Summit of the Calf of Man

  • Excavations on the Roman Fort at Abergavenny, Orchard Site, 1972–73

Kevin Blockley, Fionna Ashmore et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•1993•References: 10

Excavations revealed important elements of a pre-Flavian fort, including a well-preserved clay and turf rampart, barrack blocks and a granary. A good assemblage of contemporary pottery, metalwork and glass was associated with these levels. The results are assessed with a discussion of previous excavations in Abergavenny. The site also yielded the first firm evidence of the town's Norman defensive bank and later Edwardian town wall. A Civil War ph…

  • A 17th-century Kiln Site at Woolwich

    SYLVIA PRYOR, Kevin Blockley•ARTICLE•Post-Medieval Archaeology•1978•Cited by: 12

This report describes the results of the excavation of two adjacent kilns at Woolwich, one producing earthenware and one producing stoneware. Both date from the third quarter of the 17th century, though evidence suggests that the stoneware kiln is the earlier of the two. The report also includes a discussion of an earlier feature, a clay-lined pit, as well as several features associated with the three main features. The earthenware kiln had twin …
