Epaminondas
Epaminondas was a Theban leader who played a key role in the Theban Hegemony. Born in the last few years of the fifth century to an aristocratic family, in 371 bce he commanded the Boiotian army that defeated the Spartans at the Battle of Leuktra, effectively ending Spartan hegemony in Greece. He led four expeditions in the Peloponnese and liberated Messenia, founded Messene, and helped to found Megalopolis (Arkadia). He snatched Oropos from Athe…
Mercenaries
Mercenaries, in their capacity as soldiers serving a foreign state in exchange for payment, have been known since the emergence of the ancient states of the third millennium bce . Starting in the ninth century bce , Greek mercenaries began to be hired alongside Carians and other peoples, and these Greek soldiers began to proliferate from the Classical period. Mercenary contingents continued to be prominent during the Hellenistic period. Ultimatel…
Sympoliteia
Sympoliteia , which refers to those who share the same citizenship, can take different forms: it can refer to co‐citizenship, the citizens of the same city‐state or polis , or the establishment of a political community made up of more than one city‐state, a federal state, which can be independent or included in another sympoliteia or form part of a monarchy. The term can also refer to the unification of one state with another, without the former …
Philomelos (Philomelus)

He recruited a mercenary army and occupied the Sanctuary of Delphi, thus provoking the outbreak of the Third Sacred War. He employed the sacred treasures of Delphi to boost the number of mercenaries in his army, effectively defeating the Hesperian Lokr…
Apameia on the Euphrates, Macedonoupolis and Seleucid Forms of Political and Territorial Control
Conon, the Persian Fleet and a Second Naval Campaign in 393 BC
This paper considers the possibility that Conon fought a second naval campaign, under his sole command, after he returned to Athens, in the summer of 393. Using part of the Persian fleet for this expedition, financed by the poleis of the Aegean, Conon would have crossed the islands to reach the Hellespont and sailed along the coast of Aeolis and Ionia. The campaign was known to the Persians, but it gave the Athenians control of the Hellespontine …
Topography and History of Ancient Epicnemidian Locris
This book presents the results of a major project carried out by a team from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and the 14th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities at Lamia. The book gives a full picture of a extensive area of Greece known as Epicnemidian Locris, on which very little has been studied and published in the past. Its relevance in historical times was due to its natural environment and mainly on the pass at Thermopylae, wh…
