  • Archaeological Chemistry IV

    Ralph O Allen•BOOK•Archaeological chemistry IV•1989

This chapter is an overview of the wide variety of archaeological studies conducted by chemists. From the earliest stone artifacts to the artistic manuscripts and textiles of the more recent past, the studies presented in this volume show the wide range of materials that have been studied by chemical techniques. The field keeps expanding as chemists help provide information valuable in the interpretation of archaeological sites and artifacts. Bes…

  • The environment and evolution of an early egyptian urban center

    Open Access•Michael Allen Hoffman, Hany A Hamroush et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1987•Cited by: 6•References: 4

We describe and summarize the results of new interdisciplinary techniques for recovering and analyzing historical and paleoenvironmental data from mid‐Holocene archaeological and geological deposits in the modern Nile floodplain at the site of Hierakonpolis in Upper Egypt. Application of these techniques has produced the first stratigraphic link between historic (Early Dynastic) and late prehistoric (Predynastic) periods in the Nile Valley at a s…

  • A Model of Urban Development for the Hierakonpolis Region from Predynastic through Old Kingdom Times

  • The Utilization of Rare Earth Element Concentrations for the Characterization of Soapstone Quarries

    Open Access•M Rogers, M S ROGERS et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1983•Cited by: 6•References: 6

  • A Geochemical Approach to the Understanding of Ceramic Technology in Predynastic Egypt

    Open Access•Ralph O Allen, M S ROGERS et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1982•Cited by: 4•References: 6

  • The Application of Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis to a Study of Prehistoric Steatite Artifacts and Source Materials

    Open Access•Ralph O Allen, Alvin H Luckenbach et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1975•Cited by: 12•References: 4

S A study of the trace and minor element content of steatite artifacts from the Eastern United States has been carried out. Samples from both quarry and habitation sites ranging from New York to North Carolina have been analyzed through the use of instrumental neutron activation analysis. The most successful method of evaluating data has involved the study of a very coherent group of elements known as the Rare Earths. Geological processes cause f…
