Attitudes to Spolia in some Late Antique Texts
Attitudes to Spolia in Some Late Antique Texts
Current art historical and archaeological studies of spolia tend to assign willed, conceptual motives to the re-use of architectural and sculptural material in late antique building. But such ‘motives’—usually said to be of the propagandistic, ‘auto-legitimisation’ type—do not differ from those of past patrons, who built only with new-made materials; they can therefore in no way explain why builders started to use spolia as opposed to new materia…

Epigraphy as Spolia — The Reuse of Inscriptions in Early Medieval Buildings
After Rome was declared capital of a unified Italy in 1870, the fabric of the semi-rural Papal city was irremediably altered by a vast modernisation and expansion programme. Major new roads were cut through the mediaeval quarters of Trastevere, the Campus Martius and the Suburra; new ministries, hospitals and barracks were constructed; and great swathes of the largely unsettled disabitato were parcelled up for new housing. The zone chosen for the…

Dark age architecture in Rome

Housing in early medieval Rome, 500–1000 AD
ABITAZIONE NELIA ROMA ALTO MEDIEVALE, 500–1000 d.C.

The Walls and Aqueducts of Rome in the Early Middle Ages, A.D. 500–1000
Our knowledge of the city of Rome after the fall of the Western Empire is largely determined by its position as the seat of the Papacy. Historical studies are based principally upon the Liber Pontificalis and the writings of the popes themselves, while architectural and archaeological research has concentrated on the city's numerous churches, many of which for the period A.D. 500–850 are remarkably well-preserved. The best known modern syntheses …
