  • Environmental changes in central Mesoamerica in the Archaic and Formative periods

Open Access•Margarita Caballero, Beatriz Ortega et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2025•References: 12

This study aims to improve the understanding of climatic fluctuations in the southern Basin of Mexico (BM) during the Archaic (11,500 – 4,000 cal bp ) and Formative (4,000 – 2,000 cal bp ) archaeological periods, when early sedentary settlements at the Zohapilco and Atlapulco sites developed from ∼8,000 – 7,500 cal bp . This study is based on the analysis of diatoms, pollen, microalgae, charcoal, magnetic susceptibility, geochemistry (organic car…

  • Magnetic properties as indicators of pedogenic and pyrogenic processes at the Upper Paleolithic site of Kostenki 14

Open Access•Anastasiia Kurgaeva, Sergey Sedov et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 31

In geoarchaeological studies, there is an issue with distinguishing between natural and anthropogenic signals in pedological paleoarchives. With the pedostratigraphy of the Upper Paleolithic site of Kostenki 14, this issue is reflected by problems with the determination of features of pedogenic and pyrogenic processes. This issue was addressed by means of a thorough analysis of the magnetic properties of paleosols accompanied by micromorphologica…

  • Climatic and anthropogenic influences on vegetation changes during the last 5000 years in a seasonal dry tropical forest at the northern limits of the Neotropics

    Open Access•Socorro Lozano-García, Blanca L Figueroa‐Rangel et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•References: 9

Seasonal dry tropical forest (STDF) is a widespread vegetation type in western Mexico. Generally, this type of forest develops in semihumid habitats where lacustrine basins are scarce, preventing documentation of the vegetation history and forest dynamics using a paleoecological approach. Here, we present a palynological record from the Santa Maria del Oro crater lake, located within the distribution area of the STDF and the adjacent dry oak fore…

  • The Holocene history of a tropical high-altitude lake in central Mexico

    Open Access•Margarita Caballero, Edyta Zawisza et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 10

High-altitude lakes are sensitive to modern and past climate changes. Given their low-water temperatures, alkalinity, and nutrient levels, small climatic differences can strongly affect their water chemistry, and/or biodiversity. In central Mexico, there are only two high-altitude lakes, and both are within the crater of the Nevado de Toluca volcano. Here, we present a paleolimnological record from one of these lakes: La Luna. Previous paleoenvir…

  • Climatic variability in the northern sector of the American tropics since the latest MIS 3

    Open Access•Socorro Lozano-García, Beatriz Ortega et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

We inferred millennial-scale climate variations and paleohydrological conditions in the northern sector of the American tropics for 30.3–5.5 cal ka BP using geochemical characteristics of sediments from Lake Chalco in central Mexico. The sediment sequence is chronologically constrainedwith three tephra and nine radiocarbon dates. Temporal variations in titanium, total inorganic carbon, total organic carbon/titanium ratio, carbon/nitrogen ratio, a…

  • Late Holocene palaeoecology of Lago Verde

    Open Access•Socorro Lozano-García, Margarita Caballero et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 4

  • A Holocene record from a former coastal lagoon in Bahia Kino, Gulf of California, Mexico

    Open Access•Margarita Caballero, M C Peinalba et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 7

A 10-m-long core was recovered from the coastal flood plain on the eastern margin of the Gulf of California (Bahia Kino, Sonora). Sediments were analysed for loss-on-ignition, magnetic susceptibility, pollen, diatoms, ostracodes and foraminifera. Three levels were dated by 14 C. The combined data suggest that the site was flooded during the middle Holocene as sea level increased. At about 6600 yr BP the area was a freshwater to brackish marsh dom…

  • Mid- to Late-Wisconsin Pollen Record of San Felipe Basin, Baja California

    Open Access•Marı́a Socorro Lozano-Garcı́a, Beatriz Ortega‐Guerrero et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2002

A lacustrine sequence from Laguna Seca San Felipe, Baja California, in the southwestern Sonoran Desert, provides the first record of mid- to late-Wisconsin vegetation in one of the driest regions of North America. Pollen analysis was performed in the intermediate part of the sequence from ca. 44,000 to ca. 13,000 14 C yr B.P. according to six 14 C radiocarbon dates. Sedimentation of eolian sands prior to 44,000 14 C yr B.P. indicates dry conditio…

  • Geochemical Characterization of Late Pleistocene and Holocene Tephra Layers from the Basin of Mexico, Central Mexico

    Open Access•Beatriz Ortega‐Guerrero, Beatriz Ortega-Guerrero et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1998

In order to aid palaeoenvironmental research of Late Pleistocene and Holocene deposits of central Mexico, tephra layers collected from the sediments of the Texcoco and Chalco sub-basins, in the southern part of the Basin of Mexico, are geochemically characterized and used as stratigraphic markers. The tephra layers range in composition from basaltic andesites to rhyolites and are calc-alkaline. The tephras range in age from >34,000 to ca. 2600 14…

  • Late Pleistocene and Holocene Paleoenvironments of Chalco Lake, Central Mexico

    Open Access•Maria Socorro Lozano-Garcı́a, Beatriz Ortega‐Guerrero et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1993

In order to establish paleoenvironmental conditions during the late Quaternary, four cores from the Basin of Mexico (central Mexico) were drilled in Chalco Lake, located in the southeastern part of the basin. The upper 8 m of two parallel cores were studied, using paleomagnetic, loss-on-ignition, pollen, and diatom analyses. Based on 11 14 C ages, the analyzed record spans the last 19,000 14 C yr B.P. Volcanic activity has affected microfossil ab…
