  • Raw Materials and Lithic Production During the Early Magdalenian in Cantabrian Spain

    Open Access•Sergio Martín-Jarque, Margarita Vadillo Conesa et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 17

The lithic assemblage studied here comes from Cova Rosa, one of the main Upper Palaeolithic sites in Asturias (northern Spain). The remains were found in Layer B5, which was excavated by F. Jordá Cerdá and A. Gómez Fuentes in 1978 and are associated with an osseous assemblage and archaeozoological remains. This occupation has been dated by radiocarbon to about 16,400 BP ( ca . 19.8–19.6 ka cal BP), corresponding to Archaic/Lower Magdalenian. The …

  • Archaeological and Experimental Data from the Bipolar-on-Anvil Debitage in the Middle Paleolithic Site of Los Aljezares (Aspe, Alicante, Spain)

    Margarita Vadillo Conesa, A Eixea et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2024•References: 23

Bipolar debitage has been documented in different chronocultural and geographical contexts. In this paper, we analyze the implications of this type of exploitation in a Middle Paleolithic context where it has rarely been recognized. The observation of the archaeological materials is combined with a geological characterization, which has made it possible to determine the qualities and original morphology of the exploited volumes. These aspects are…

  • The Solutrean Antlerworking in Hort de Cortés–Volcán del Faro (Valencia, Spain) in the Southwest Europe Context

Open Access•María Borao Álvarez, Lisandro Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2023

In this work, we present a preliminary analysis of the Solutrean antlerworking at Hort de Cortés–Volcán del Faro (Valencia, Spain) (ca. 26–21 ka cal BP). A restudy of its archaeological sequence, which came to encompass the Early Upper Palaeolithic to the Magdalenian period, has been a mandatory subject in the last years. This site became an archaeological reference since the beginning of its excavation in the 1960s but has not been systematicall…

  • La Cuevona de Avín (Avín, Asturias, North Spain)

    Open Access•Esteban Álvarez-Fernández, Sergio Martín-Jarque et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 22

The archaeological investigations carried out in the last twenty years in the Lower Valley of the River Güeña (Asturias, central part of northern Spain) have documented different prehistoric sites, particularly with Middle and Upper Palaeolithic occupations. This paper presents the results of the archaeological excavation carried out in the cave of La Cuevona de Avín. From the systematic study of the biotic and abiotic remains, a total of three o…

  • A Review of Splintered Pieces from Two Lithic Assemblages in Mediterranean Europe

Margarita Vadillo Conesa, Giulia Ricci et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2021

The interest of this paper lies in the analysis of variability detected within the group of splintered pieces, establishing distinctions within this broad category. A technological and traceological reading has been used for this purpose. These analyses have been applied to two geographically distant, chronologically disparate assemblages, which make up our case study, Grotta della Serratura, (Italy) and Cueva de Nerja (Spain). Addressing these a…

  • The Early and Middle Holocene Lithic Industries of Ifri n’Etsedda (Eastern Rif, Morocco)

    Open Access•Manuel Broich, Alessandro Potì et al.•ARTICLE•African Archaeological Review•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 23

Archaeological research has been carried out in the Eastern Rif (Morocco) since 1995 by a collaborative Moroccan-German research team. A major topic of the project is the transition from hunting-gathering to food production and related cultural developments. Innovations such as pottery and domesticated species appeared around 7.6 ka calBP. The cultivation of cereals and pulses is evident at that time. Two of the most important sites in the area a…

In the Iberian Mediterranean region it is difficult to find studies dedicated to the percutors-touchers used in the lithic production of the Epipalaeolithic. This work presents the study of 11 small pebbles located in caves of Santa Maira (Castell de Castells, Alicante), which were recovered in the Epipaleolithic levels, dated between 13445 and 10195 years bp. These are rounded, flattened and elongated pebbles, in which various marks have been id…
