  • Differences in tibial shape among the Prehispanic inhabitants from Gomera, Punta Azul (El Hierro), and Gran Canaria (Canary Islands)

    Emilio González‐reimer, Emilio González-Reimers et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2017•Cited by: 1

The Canary Archipelago was colonized by North African Berbers who arrived at the Islands in the first millenium BC. Although it was classically considered that the prehispanic population was more or less uniform, recent genetic analysis has disclosed that some differences did exist between inhabitants of the different islands. From pure anthropometrical point of view, detailed inspection of some bones such as tibiae of prehispanic inhabitants of …

  • Genetic studies on the prehispanic population buried in Punta Azul cave (El Hierro, Canary Islands)

    Open Access•Alejandra C Ordóñez, Rosa Fregel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2016•Cited by: 10•References: 1

  • Savoury Recipes and the Colour of the Tlatelcomila Human Bones

    Open Access•A Trujillo‐Mederos, Aioze Trujillo Mederos et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 37

Bones from Tlatelcomila (Tetelpan, México D.F.) were characterized by several complementary physical and chemical techniques, such as X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, energy‐dispersive spectroscopy and ultraviolet spectroscopy, to determine whether they were boiled or grilled. The usual correlation between thermal treatment and colour is revisited in terms of microscopic s…

  • Cartilage-derived tumor in a prehispanic individual from La Gomera (Canary Islands)

    Open Access•Matilde Arnay‐de‐la‐rosa, Matilde Arnay-De-La-Rosa et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

  • Osteoarthritis among the prehispanic population from La Gomera and El Hierro (Canary Islands)

    María Castañeyra-Ruiz, Aioze Trujillo-Mederos et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2015•Cited by: 1

The pathogenesis of osteoarthritis is still unclear, and several factors may play a role in its development, including joint trauma or microtrauma (usually related to lifestyle), local inflammation, loading charge, and genetics. Assessment of osteoarthritis among ancient populations is important, since it may yield information relative to life habits. Therefore, we have performed the present study in order to assess the prevalence of osteoarthrit…

  • Hallux Valgus among an 18th Century Population of the Canary Islands

    Open Access•A Trujillo‐medero, A Trujillo‐Mederos et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Hallux valgus is defined as the lateral deviation of the great toe. It is considered a disease mainly related to the use of boots or shoes that constrict the foot. This process usually ensues along many years and is accompanied by changes at the metatarsophalangeal joint, which serve to make the diagnosis on bare bones. Diagnostic criteria include lateral deviation of the metatarsophalangeal joint (1), lateral subluxation of the first phalanx, de…

  • Genetic sexing to determine the optimal discriminant functions for the analysis of archaeological remains from El Hierro (Canary Islands)
