Counting Money
The numismatic collection in the Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, Auckland, New Zealand, is an extensive although little-known collection. As part of a wider rehousing project for the coins, a trial was conducted to rehouse the Greek and Roman coins to establish the best storage and analysis practices. Records were also created or updated during this process to make them visible online and enable their use in future research. Best…
From decolonisation to authoritarianism
This article discusses how the critique of the monopoly of Western liberal thought through the decolonisation movement that was intended to increase the number of voices heard has been co-opted by nationalist politics in India and Russia. The debates in higher education in these countries reflect current key questions on the nature of the Indian and Russian nations—both under respective nationalist governments—where both are advocating a cutting …
Failure of Healthcare Provision for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in the United Kingdom
Background: Despite evidence-based national guidelines for ADHD in the United Kingdom (UK), ADHD is under-identified, under-diagnosed, and under-treated. Many seeking help for ADHD face prejudice, long waiting lists, and patchy or unavailable services, and are turning to service-user support groups and/or private healthcare for help. Methods: A group of UK experts representing clinical and healthcare providers from public and private healthcare, …
A Clinical Feasibility Study of the Forensic Psychiatry and Violence Oxford (FoVOx) Tool
Background: Risk assessment informs decisions around admission to and discharge from secure psychiatric hospital and contributes to treatment and supervision. There are advantages to using brief, scalable, free online tools with similar accuracy to instruments currently used. We undertook a study of one such risk assessment, the Forensic Psychiatry and Violence Oxford (FoVOx) tool, examining its acceptability, feasibility, and practicality. Metho…

European Union anti-piracy initiatives in the Horn of Africa
Piracy off the coast of Somalia has resulted in a steady decline in trade through the Arabian Sea and higher costs of doing business for multiple world regions. The EU has responded to the threat with a large-scale anti-piracy operation in the Horn of Africa, which constitutes the first free-standing Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) military operation that is not entirely dependent on North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) planning an…

Somali Boundaries and the Question of Statehood
In 1990, the state of Somalia collapsed. Since then, the country has remained infamous in international development circles as the world’s only truly failed state. However, this assessment shows only part of a far more interesting bigger picture. Not only does Somalia possess four distinct administrative institutions that exhibit varying levels of capacity, but robust clan-based structures have served to maintain surprisingly high levels of law a…
Security, Clans and Tribes
Offering an introduction to clanism and tribalism in the Gulf of Aden area, Dr Lewis uses these concepts to analyse security in Yemen, Somalia, Somaliland and the broader region. This historical overv
Experiences of Sexual and Gender Minorities Caring for Adults with Non-Aids-Related Chronic Illnesses
A number of marginalized communities receive inadequate attention in the extensive body of existing research on informal caregivers; this is particularly true of the sexual and gender minority (SGM) community. This article features a review of the evidence regarding the experiences of SGMs involved in the informal care of chronically ill friends or family members and examines the specific research strategies that have been involved in developing …
