The Archaeology of Industrialization
Archaeology of Industrialization
The Archaeology of Industrialization — New Directions
The ‘Archaeology of Industrialization’ conference was a joint venture by the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology and Association for Industrial Archaeology: two organizations with very different origins and developments, and still, to an extent, different mindsets. The archaeology of industrialization, then, has until recently been studied by two rather-separate communities, deriving from different roots and operating in separate sub-discipline…

Archaeological Investigations at Swalwell Ironworks, Tyne and Wear
A programme of archaeological investigations was undertaken at Sands Road, Swalwell in Gateshead to examine part of the Swalwell Ironworks founded by Ambrose Crowley in 1707, ahead of the redevelopment of the site as a supermarket. The well-preserved sub-surface remains of buildings dating from the earliest phase of the ironworks were revealed including the eastern part of the Grand Warehouse, constructed by 1713, which was divided into two parts…
From Slitting Mill to Alloy Steel
This reviews Men of Iron, M.W. Flinn's 1962 analysis of Swalwell Ironworks and the Crowley organisation of which it formed part, in the light of new information and a different approach. Ambrose Crowley III (1658–1713) developed a major mercantile iron business, supplied by his factories on Tyneside. The first major works, at Winlaton Mill, was started in the 1690s. Swalwell was set up by a separate company, but acquired by Crowley in 1707; he ad…
The Whitehaven Coast 1500-2000 – Post- Medieval, Industrial and Historical Archaeology?
A review of current debates on the nature and direction of ‘Industrial Archaeology’ is presented, emphasising the importance of technology and industry within a holistic archaeology of the later second millennium CE, itself situated within a historical archaeology that in Britain extends back to the Roman period. The debate between ‘Industrial’ and ‘Post-Medieval’ archaeology is seen as part of the ‘two cultures’ of sciences and humanities, and t…
Crossing Paths or Sharing Tracks?
Brings together over thirty of the leading scholars in Post Medieval archaeology and examines how this relatively new discipline has developed and where it is going. The impetus for this volume lies in the expansion of interest in Post Medieval archaeology in university, commercial, and voluntary sectors. The study of Post Medieval archaeology is a relatively new discipline but, within archaeology as a whole, it represents one of the fastest grow…

A Record of Atmospheric Pollution and Vegetation Change as Recorded in Three Peat Bogs from the Northern Pennines Pb-Zn Orefield
The metal mining landscape of the northern Pennines is unique, containing a relatively large concentration of mines dating back possibly to the Roman period. Little attention, however, has been given to understanding how the metal mining industry has altered the natural landscape. This paper sets out to address this by using palaeoenvironmental techniques to reconstruct the vegetational landscape and atmospheric pollution history surrounding the …

Excavation
The author, a professional archaeologist, describes some techniques of late twentieth century archaeological excavation on industrial sites, drawing on his own experience on mining and metallurgical sites; it is hoped that the conclusions will be more widely applicable. He highlights the importance of detailed factual recording, high-quality excavation methods where appropriate, the study of process residues, and the integration of detailed build…

The Archaeology of Washing Floors
The author had directed excavations on three washing floor sites, all predominantly of nineteenth century date and all in northern England. He argues that published discussions of ore-dressing have drawn heavily on a limited number of contemporary written sources, and that recording and excavation of sites would aid the understanding of these complex processes. His paper concludes with a discussion of the problems encountered in the excavation of…
