Preliminary Report on the 2024 Fieldwork at Phoenix
The fourth season of the Phoenix Archaeological Project (PAP), conducted in 2024, focused on the northern and eastern chora of Phoenix on the Bozburun Peninsula in south-western Turkey. Intensive survey and documentation were carried out across c. 600 hectares, integrating archaeological, geomorphological, epigraphic, and biodiversity studies, as well as oral history interviews and contemporary art initiatives. At Gökçalca, a terraced hillside se…
Preliminary Report on the 2023 Fieldwork at Phoenix and Casara
The Phoenix Archaeological Project (PAP) fieldwork in 2023 was the third multidisciplinary campaign focusing on the southern areas of the Phoenix and Casara archaeological sites on the Bozburun Peninsula in Turkey. A rural settlement landscape with agricultural workshops, olive oil production sites, wineries and farmsteads, was documented over an area of around 750 hectares. The investigations also covered the harbours of Gedik Bay and Serçe Lima…
New Antigonid Inscriptions from Euromos
The author publishes three new decrees from the Antigonid period that were dis-covered during the 2017 excavation campaign in Euromos in the sanctuary of Zeus Lep-synos. The first two decrees were engraved on a tall stele and honour Podilos, philos, and Charmadas, phrourarchos of king Antigonos III Doson (229–221). We learn that they were brothers and came from the city of Lykastos on Crete. This is the first inscription from Caria in which Doson…
Preliminary Report on the 2022 Fieldwork at Phoenix
The ancient site of Phoenix in the southwest of the Bozburun peninsula (Marmaris) and the adjacent areas were the subject of a second multidisciplinary archaeological campaign in the summer of 2022. After an initial survey campaign in 2021, which focused on the Phoenix settlement and its hinterland, a first excavation campaign was carried out at the Apollo sanctuary / Kızlan church in 2022. In parallel with the excavations, another team conducted…
Preliminary Report on the 2021 Fieldwork at Phoenix
Maussollos and the Date of the Transfer of the Seat of the Karian Satrapy to Halikarnassos
This paper argues that Maussollos (377–353 BC) transferred the seat of the Karian satrapy from Mylasa to Halikarnassos early in his reign. Until now the date of the transfer was a matter of speculation and various proposals in the interval 377–362 BC based on thin evidence have been proposed. Numismatic evidence, however, provides a clear indication that the move took place in c. 375 BC. This early date has historical and archaeological consequen…
Karia Arkhaia.
Pidasa, Miletos, and the Karian revolt
Herodotus (6.20) tells us how after the revolt and defeat of Miletos of 494 BC its mountain territory was given to the Karians of Pedasa1. Modern literature has hesitated on the identification of this Pedasa, although more often it has been considered that the city of that name was the homonymous Pedasa located north of Halikarnassos. However, this identification should be abandoned. Despite the apparent name difference, it can be proved that the…
