  • Effects of stream restoration by legacy sediment removal and floodplain reconnection on water quality

Open Access•Patrick Mcmahon, Patrick Lasater McMahon et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

The effectiveness of many stream restorations in improving water quality is unmeasured. In the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, activity by European settlers resulted in upland erosion and deposition of sediments 1–3 m in thickness in stream valleys. Subsequently, streams incised those legacy sediments creating steep, exposed banks, infrequent floodplain inundation, and water tables disconnected from floodplains. Legacy sediment removal …

  • Elihu Thomson's jumping ring in a levitated closed-loop control experiment

    Open Access•Noel Barry, R Casey•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•1999

A conducting nonmagnetic ring is levitated above a coil excited by an AC source, using the same principle as that of the well-known jumping ring experiment, originally discovered by Elihu Thomson. The AC source is amplitude modulated to ensure that the ring stays in a stationary levitated position. The circuit is analyzed using a simple electrical/magnetic treatment, and the parameters of the system are found. A control strategy is derived for th…
