Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from North American soybean production
The agricultural sector is responsible for substantial amounts of greenhouse gas emissions that exacerbate climate change. Such greenhouse gas emissions from upland crops are difficult to abate because they are dominated by nitrous oxide (N2O) production from soil processes. Strategies to reduce these emissions focus on N fertilizer management, and there is a widespread assumption that legume crops, which do not receive N fertilizer, emit little …
Shifting agricultural practices to produce sustainable, low carbon intensity feedstocks for biofuel production
The carbon intensity (CI) of biofuel’s well-to-pump life cycle is calculated by life cycle analysis (LCA) to account for the energy/material inputs of the feedstock production and fuel conversion stages and the associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during these stages. The LCA is used by the California Air Resources Board’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) program to calculate CI and monetary credits are issued based on the difference between …
Mohammed Bashir Salau. The West African Slave Plantation
This revised dissertation examines the slave plantation of Fanisau in the Kano emirate from the time of its establishment in the early 1800s under the new Islamic Caliphate of Sokoto until the early 1900s when it became a part of British colonial Nigeria. Mohammed Bashir Salau's case study is based principally on oral interviews with local residents conducted in the 1970s by Paul E. Lovejoy (Salau's mentor) and by Yusuf Yunusa. In 2008 Salau and …
Migration and Empire, by Marjorie Harper and Stephen Constantine
This volume in the Oxford History of the British Empire Companion Series explores population movements within the British Empire between 1815 and the 1960s. Chapters focused on the main migration streams from Britain to other parts of the Empire and from the Empire to Britain are complemented by comparative chapters on social, economic, and political themes, which are generally of greater sophistication and originality. It deserves perhaps two he…
