A Personal History in Black – A Portrait of a Historian in her Youth in Belgrade (1979-1991)
This paper originated from a draft and visual presentation for a scientific conference, aiming to relate a personal story as part of the fashion history of the socialist Serbia/Yugoslavia. The approach takes myself both as a witness and a historian, making the narrative inevitably biased, intimate and sentimental. Nevertheless, the presented material evidence (my fashion sketches, personal photographs) and my recollections of the ‘city’ and its ‘…
Pictures and Words 2 – An Italian Caricature at the End of the Great Vienna War (1683–1699) as “Icono-Text”
This paper is a branch of my previous research, dealing with allegorical and persuasive cartography, as an exercise in more recent theoretical interpretations of marginalized historical sources – caricatures. The introduction gives the readers an overview of the modern methodology and secondary literature. Furthermore, Giuseppe Maria Mitelli (1634–1718) is unknown to our audience. Therefore, this paper cannot deal with his immenseoeuvre, but only…
Pictures and Words: Allegorical and Persuasive Cartography
This paper aims to present a novel approach to map analysis, treating all ‘map-like’ drawings as icono-texts, according to premises postulated in modern cartographical theory by Brian Harley and his successors in this field. It is not just ‘deconstructing’ which takes place, but further interpretations are stimulated by probing questions not only of authorship (often unknown), but also of the social, cultural, and religious environment. Making an…
Aqua vitae – Notes on Geographies of Alcohol Production and Consumption in the Ottoman Balkans
The paper addresses the beginning of brandy distillation in the Ottoman Balkan, the transfer of technology, commerce and taxation, as well as patterns of consumption. Those patterns include rules of alcohol production, distribution and use according to religion, class and gender, i.e. restrictions and their transgressions. Linguistic, documentary and narrative sources are deployed in building a multifaceted picture. Production of various spirits,…
Wine or Raki - The Interplay of Climate and Society in Early Modern Ottoman Bosnia
Variations in the agricultural production of cereals and grapes observed in sixteenth century Ottoman tax registers of Northern Bosnia could be ascribed to changes provoked, among other causes, by climatic variability during the early phase of the 'Little Ice Age' (ca 1550-1650). Comparative analysis with other well-studied European regions is conducted within the general frame of the socio-cultural context of climate and other impacts on a pre-i…
