Torchbearers Forging Indigenous Pathways: Transcending the Forces of Wétiko
Wétiko is a Cree term whose literal translation is cannibalism, an act of violent aggression. This term encapsulates the divisive forces that have infected the Americas for over 500 years, resulting in generational cultural trauma, and dehumanization of all who are subjected to its modern manifestations. It is analogous to an oppressive pandemic whose symptoms include racism, xenophobia, self-hatred, and despair. Despite the persistent forces of …

Darius V. Echeverría. Aztlán Arizona: Mexican American Educational Empowerment, 1968–1978

In Aztlán Arizona: Mexican American Educational Empowerment, 1968–1978, Darius V. Protecting America’s Borders and the Undocumented Immigrant Dilemma
This chapter provides a broad overview of the evolution of the debate concerning unauthorized migration and border control, focusing in particular on the tension and mutual antagonism that has historically existed between those who advocate strict policies of border enforcement and those who, primarily for economic reasons, tend to promote more lenient immigration policies. Particular emphasis is given to the development of U.S. immigration law, …
Dorothee SCHNEIDER. Crossing Borders: Migration and Citizenship in the Twentieth-Century United States
In this work of original research and synthetic scholarship, Dorothee Schneider provides an overview of the history of U.S. immigration and naturalization policies over the last century and an analysis of the various ways immigrant/ethnic groups (and their political allies) contended with the web of controls and restrictions imposed upon them. Thematically organized, the book has separate chapters on the social dynamics of immigrant-sending regio…
The “New Normal”? Reflections on the Shifting Politics of the Immigration Debate
The intensity of the recent debate over the presence of an estimated eleven to twelve million unauthorized persons in the United States often creates the impression that the current situation somehow represents a historical anomaly in the long-running debate over US immigration policy and citizenship law. This brief commentary contests that view, suggesting instead that the mass circulation and permanent presence of unauthorized persons has been …

IntroductionNation and Migration David G. Gutiérrez (bio) and Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo (bio) It is not an exaggeration to argue that much of the terrain in American studies—and in the humanities and social sciences more generally—has been transformed in recent years by a fundamental reconsideration of the relationship between capitalism, the nation-state, and human migration spurred by the so-called transnational turn. Significant to Whom?: Mexican Americans and the History of the American West
In considering Mexican-American history, one might argue that the debate about the significance or importance of ethnic Mexican people in the American West has reflected the central themes of the social and political history of the region. The most important theme unifying this chapter was obvious concern to represent ordinary working-class Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants as complex, fully formed, and fully functional human beings.
