Talking” Tiles from Vanished Ilkhanid Palaces (Late Thirteenth to Early Fourteenth Centuries)
Luster tiles in Ilkhanid palace decoration are repeatedly linked with the site of Takht-i Sulaiman (Iran). However, the collection and analysis of ninety-two frieze luster tiles (or frag-ments) characterized by a similar scheme indicates the existence of other palatial locations. Sorting the tiles results in at least eight different friezes. Consequently, possible locations of other Ilkhanid palaces are investigated. Textual contents mainly origi…
George Michell et Helen Philon, Islamic Architecture of Deccan India

The Shahi ʿIdgah of 1312 at Rapri (Uttar Pradesh)
The Shahi ʿIdgah at Rapri (Uttar Pradesh), which dates to 1312, was built by Malik Kafur, the general of the Delhi sultan ʿAla ʾuddin Khalji (1296–1316). The village of Rapri was part of Malik Kafur’s fief and an important station for the army, as it commanded a ford on the Yamuna River. ʿ Īdgāh s, sometimes translated as “wall-mosques,” are extra-urban, open prayer spaces for accommodating large congregations during the two main religious festiv…
Jahanpanah’s Jamiʿ Masjid (Circa 1343)
The Begumpuri or Jamiʿ (Friday) Masjid of Jahanpanah (Delhi) is an impressive monument built during the Tughluq period, circa 1343. Although often credited to Firuz Shah (1351–88), the mosque was probably ordered by Muhammad Shah Tughluq (1325–51), since it was situated next to his royal palace in the heart of his capital (Jahanpanah). The Begumpuri Masjid represents a particular phase in the sequence of Tughluq architecture, both for its plan an…
Éghvard, (Arménie, début XIV e siècle), La chapelle de l’alliance
The chapel of Yeghvard was built in the first third of the 14th century. The small local principality was one of the rare areas in Armenia where an artistic activity was able to continue during the tough period of Mongol domination. The three-storeyed building comprises a chapel-mausoleum, an oratory, and a bell-tower in the shape of a small rotunda, a structure of Antique origin, popular at that period in Armenia. The Yeghvard chapel distinguish…
