The Late Agricultural Development of Central Arabian Oases—Archaeobotanical and Archaeozoological Studies of the al‐Kharj Oasis
While oasis settlements emerged during the Bronze Age in Eastern and Northern Arabia, the settlement process in Central Arabia was different. Excavations at al‐Yamāma—main ancient settlement of the al‐Kharj oasis (Riyadh Province, KSA)—suggest that the latter did not emerge before the second half of the first millennium BCE. This late appearance has also been documented at a regional scale in areas of Buraydah, Marāt, Laylà‐Aflaj and Qaryat al‐Fā…
Bridging the Late Antique Gap in Northwest Arabia
In 2019, the Dadan Archaeological Project (CNRS/RCU/AFALULA) identified a Late Antique village 1 km south of ancient Dadan in the al‐ʿUlā valley (northwest Saudi Arabia). Three excavation seasons at this site (2021–2023) have uncovered a massive building constructed in the late third or early fourth cent. Lors des campagnes 2017 et 2018, nous avons fouillé un deuxième fortin ptolémaïque, localisé sur

Plant Supplying Strategies in an Islamic Omani Harbour City
Few archaeobotanical studies have been undertaken on Islamic period sites in eastern Arabia. Excavations conducted by Dr. Axelle Rougeulle (UMR 8167) at Qalhat in the framework of the Qalhat Project, have provided the opportunity to improve our knowledge on plant consumption and supply strategies. Samples from the workshop B39 (14th-16th century AD) excavated in 2014-2015 have provided a substantial amount of seed and fruit remains that are the o…
