  • Imperial Art and Power in the Liternum Episode of Silius Italicus’ Punica

    Dániel Kozák•ARTICLE•Mnemosyne•2020•References: 20

The paper is concerned with Silius’ double ecphrasis of a Roman monument of the First Punic War at Liternum, and Hannibal’s planned counter-monument (Sil. 6.653-716). It is suggested that these are compared as parts of commemorative networks rather than as standalone memorials: ambiguities in Hannibal’s speech can be interpreted as hints that he might be planning a series of monuments, while the Roman monument is described as ‘secondary’ in relat…

  • Urban Megaprojects

Open Access•Guillermo Jajamovich, Dániel Kozák•CHAPTER•The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia…•2019

Urban megaprojects are public or public–private operations of urban transformation defined as such based on their spatial scale, their cost, the planning models on which they are based, and/or the land value that they produce. The term “megaproject” was coined in the 1970s as part of a series of public and private initiatives in Canada. However, it is usual to find it retrospectively applied, in order to conceptualize projects that are prior to t…

Large-scale urban projects (lups) are recurrent instruments in contemporary planning. In general, they are the result of the transformation of former industrial sites, or areas that have lost their purpose and became relegated. On the one hand, lups are cherished opportunities for localities to transform problematic areas into bright new centralities; on the other hand they are opportunities for the multiplication of capital. However, lups can al…

  • Weaving “Catullan” song: Achilles’ performances in Statius’ Achilleid

    Dániel Kozák•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2016

It has already been discussed in Statian scholarship that Achilles’ first song in the Achilleid has close intertextual ties to Catullus’ Carmen 64, the epyllion about the wedding of Achilles’ parents. My aim in this paper is to show that this special intertextual relationship with Catullus 64 is not confined to Achilles’ first song, but extends to the other two passages as well, where the hero is presented as a singer (1. 572–583 and 2. 157–158).…

A Statius Achilleis ében olvasható három hajnalleírás (1. 242–5; 1. 819–20; 2. 1–4) szorosan kapcsolódik Achilles „átváltozásaihoz” a műben.

  • The dawn of Achilles. Light imagery in the Iliad and Statius’ Achilleid

    Dániel Kozák•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2007

All three descriptions of dawn in Statius’ Achilleid (1. 242–5; 1. 819–20; 2. 1–4) are tightly connected to the “metamorphoses” of Achilles in the poem. These passages also recall the dawn opening Iliad 19, and the Homeric system of metaphors and symbols comparing the hero’s return to battle to the arrival of light and dawn. A particularly complex connection between Achilles’ exposure and the sunrise is established in the third Statian passage un…
