A Semi-Automatic Semantic-Model-Based Comparison Workflow for Archaeological Features on Roman Ceramics
In this paper, we introduce applications of Artificial Intelligence techniques, such as Decision Trees and Semantic Reasoning, for semi-automatic and semantic-model-based decision-making for archaeological feature comparisons. This paper uses the example of Roman African Red Slip Ware (ARS) and the collection of ARS at the LEIZA archaeological research institute. The main challenge is to create a Digital Twin of the ARS objects and artefacts usin…
Hadrian's Wall and its Continental Hinterland
This paper assesses the effects which the building of Hadrian's Wall had on the patterns of supply and communication from the continent. Existing systems were strengthened rather than altered, and Hadrian's reign saw the full development of ports and military installations on the North Sea and Channel coasts. Navigation to Britain and sailing conditions on various routes are discussed, comparing their importance in the transport of wine, oil, exo…
Was there a Difference between Roman 'Civil' and 'Military' Samian (terra sigillata) Market Supply? Finding answers with statistical distribution analysis methods
The Roman tableware pottery samian (terra sigillata) was distributed over the whole Roman Empire. From the early days of archaeological research, it has always been considered as an instrument not only for analysing Roman trading routes, but also for comparing consumption patterns in smaller regions and between individual sites. This article questions the degree to which samian can fulfil these expectations
