The Production of Affluence in Central New York
Colonial Houses and Cultural Identity in New York State’s Mohawk River Valley
In the mid-eighteenth century, the Mohawk River Valley was the colonial frontier in New York, and different social, political, and cultural groups were creating their identity through action and material culture, including the built environment. Two houses, built in 1749 and 1750, are compared in relation to identity and social position of their owners. The landscape was investigated using archaeogeophysics and targeted excavation to determine ho…
The Reality of Precaution

The Reality of Precaution is the most comprehensive study to go beyond precaution as an abstract principle and test its reality in practice. This groundbreaking resource combines detailed case studies of a wide array of risks to health, safety, environment and security; a broad quantitative analysis; and cross-cutting chapters on politics, la…
Comparing Similar Ground‐penetrating Radar Surveys Under Different Moisture Conditions at Kalavasos‐ Ayios Dhimitrios , Cyprus
Water is known as being a dominant factor in ground‐penetrating radar reflection and transmission from subsurface interfaces. Before embarking on a multi‐season, large‐scale survey of late Bronze Age cities in Cyprus we wanted to empirically identify the impact of seasonal moisture on ground‐penetrating radar transmission and reflection from buried Late Bronze Age architecture to determine the optimum time of the year to conduct our surveys. Havi…

Gerrard Winstanley on Crime and Punishment
In the late 1640s and early 1650s, Gerrard Winstanley wrote much about crime and punishment, particularly in his final work, Law of Freedom in a Platform (1652). A great deal of the modern commentary on his legal thought has centered on whether or not the extensive criminal code in Law of Freedom constituted a totalitarian legal system in support of his utopian vision. A more fruitful approach is to view Winstanley's writings as part of a broad r…

Caillois' classification of games
A good theoretical system for classifying games is needed for such purposes as apportioning resources and determining areas of responsibility. Caillois' system is critically examined and found to have shortcomings in illuminating the nature of games. Images of a game are changeable and indicate little of its nature. We should not expect games to conform to any sensible system as they offer total experiences which are difficult to classify for pra…
