Submerged coastal systems along the western Sardinian shelf (Mediterranean Sea)
This paper presents the geophysical mapping of the western Sardinia continental shelf (Mediterranean Sea, Italy). The focus is to highlight the various submerged coastal systems associated with the last eustatic cycle, consisting of beach barriers, submerged depositional terraces, submerged dunes and the current infralittoral prograding wedges. The study was carried out by interpreting MBES data, SSS photomosaics, reflection seismic data and aeri…
Geohazard features of the Northern Sardinia
The maps of the geohazard-related features of the North Sardinia continental margin produced by the Magic project (MArine Geohazard along Italian Coasts) are here presented. The maps were created on the base of morphobathymetric data obtained by with multibeam echo sounders. ThreCoNISMa, DSCG Università degli studi di Cagliari, Cittadella Universitaria Monserrato - S.P. Monserrato-Sestu, Monserrato (CA), Italye wide canyon systems, Castelsardo to…
Geohazard features of the Southern Sardinia
The Maps of Geohazard features of Southern Sardinia produced in the framework of the Magic project (MArine Geohazard along Italian Coasts) are here presented. The MaGIC project (Marine Geohazard along the Italian Coasts) had the aim of mapping the geohazard in the Italian seas. The features were derived from the digital elevation model interpretation of the seafloor morphology and shallow sub-surface. From the marine geo-hazards point of view, th…
The paleolandscape evolution of the southwestern coast of Sardinia (Italy) and its impact on Mesolithic settlements
We present a geomorphological map of the southwestern coast of Sardinia encompassing inland and offshore areas of the S’Omu e S’Orku Mesolithic site. The submerged area was documented by high-resolution multibeam bathymetry combined with Side-Scan Sonar data. The emerged coastal area was surveyed using Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle Remote Sensing and field surveys. The inland landforms were shaped by coastal, fluvial, and gravity-induced processes. Mos…
Deep-seated gravitational slope deformations in central Sardinia
In this study, we analyse deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSDs) in central Sardinia. The area is characterised by plateaus with a prominent limestone scarp overlying metamorphites. A comprehensive mapping of structural, karst, fluvial, and slope morphologies in Pardu and Ulassai valleys is presented herein. The uplift linked to the Plio-Pleistocene tectonic activity leads to high-slope topography, which favours gravitational proce…
Geomorphology of the continental shelf of Tavolara Island (Marine Protected Area ‘Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo’ – Sardinia NE)
In this document a geological – geomorphological map in scale 1: 25,000 is presented. The study area is located inside the Protected Marine Area Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo, in north-eastern Sardinia. The study was done through integrated analysis of multibeam bathymetric and very high-resolution side scan sonar data, acquired in an area of 163 km2 with the purpose of mapping the main biocoenoses and with particular reference to the coralligeno…
Flooding scenario for four Italian coastal plains using three relative sea level rise models
The coastal areas of the central Mediterranean Sea are sensitive to climate change and the consequent relative sea level rise. Both phenomena may affect densely urbanized and populated areas, causing severe damages. Our maps show the land-marine flooding projections as effects of the expected relative sea level rise for four Italian coastal plains using (i) IPCC AR5 estimations, based on the IPCC RCP 8.5 emission scenarios and (ii) the Rahmstorf 2…
