New evidence from Bouldnor Cliff for technological innovation in the Mesolithic, population dispersal and use of drowned landscapes
Submerged Archaeology and Cultural Responses to Climatic Amelioration
Prehistoric Coastal Communities
Coastlines, Submerged Landscapes, and Human Evolution
We examine some long-standing assumptions about the early use of coastlines and marine resources and their contribution to the pattern of early human dispersal, and focus on the southern Red Sea Basin and the proposed southern corridor of movement between Africa and Arabia across the Bab al-Mandab Straits. We reconstruct relative sea levels in light of isostatic and tectonic effects, and evaluate their paleogeographical impact on the distribution…
Møllebegt II-a Submerged Mesolithic Settlement in Southern Denmark
The Maritime Archaeology of the Solent
Stone Age Stove under the Solent
Drowned and deserted
A submerged landscape containing worked flint tools has been found at—11m OD in the western Solent. This paper reviews coastal sites in northern Europe and suggests that many similar sites should exist around the coast of southern England; as a result of isostatic shifts and eustatic fluctuations many coastal sites of the Mesolithic will now be submerged. A need has been identified to locate, protect and record submerged sites before they are los…
The application of the Submetrix Isis 100 Swath Bathymetry system to the management of underwater sites
Over the last decade analysis of the HMS Pomone wreck scattered below the Needles has aimed to correlate artefact positions with their terrain and aid research into the distribution process of the wreck-site. However, physical limitations faced by divers on the site have restricted progress. The search for a solution to the difficulties of archaeological surveying was resolved by the Submetrix ISIS 100 system when a bathymetric survey of the wrec…
