Natural Resource Dependence and Monopolized Imports
Countries with greater commodity export intensity have more concentrated markets for imported goods. Import market concentration is associated with higher domestic prices, suggesting that markups due to greater concentration outweigh any potential cost efficiency. Tariffs, non-tariff measures, and tariff evasion are mechanisms that concentrate import markets. These results suggest a novel channel for the resource curse stemming from the monopoliz…

Corruption in Customs
This paper presents a new methodology to detect corruption in customs and applies it to Madagascar's main port. Manipulation of assignment of import declarations to inspectors is identified by measuring deviations from random assignment prescribed by official rules. Changes in control beliefs in Portuguese primary school pupils as a consequence of the employment of self-assessment strategies
Previous findings suggest that a move towards internality in control beliefs is positively associated with academic success. The present study set out to explore the extent to which the use of self-assessment techniques by Portuguese primary school children is positively associated with increased internality, and to establish whether the presence of these techniques together with enhanced internality correlate with improved academic (mathematical…
Improvements in mathematics performance as a consequence of self‐assessment in Portuguese primary school pupils
The research set out to test the effects upon children's academic (mathematical) performance of the regular use of pupil self‐assessment techniques taught to a group of 25 primary school teachers on a 40 hours INSET course, and subsequently introduced by them as routine procedures in their individual classes. Results showed that the children ( N =354) in these classes manifested significant improvements in scores on a purpose‐built mathematics te…
