  • Zooarchaeological Database Preservation, Multiscalar Data Integration, and the Collaboration of the Eastern Archaic Faunal Working Group

Open Access•Sarah Neusius, Bonnie Styles et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Data preservation, reuse, and synthesis are important goals in contemporary archaeological research that have been addressed by the recent collaboration of the Eastern Archaic Faunal Working Group (EAFWG). We used the Digital Archaeological Record (tDAR) to preserve 60 significant legacy faunal databases from 23 Archaic period archaeological sites located in several contiguous subregions of the interior North American Eastern Woodlands. In order …

  • Paleontology and paleoecology of guano deposits in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, USA

    Open Access•Chris Widga, Mona Colburn•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

Bat guano deposits are common in the Mammoth Cave system (Kentucky, USA). Paleontological remains associated with these deposits are important records of local landscape changes. Recent excavations in the cave suggest that vertebrate remains in most of these deposits are dominated by Chiroptera. Although no extinct fauna were identified, the presence of a large roost of Tadarida brasiliensis in the Chief City section is beyond the northern extent…

  • Cranial osteology of the redear sunfish: Examples from the American Midwest

    Open Access•Mona Colburn, Mona L Colburn•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•1997

Cranial elements of modern redear sunfish (Lepomis microlophus) were examined for characteristics that distinguish it from other species of sunfish (Lepomis spp.). Distinctive elements include the lower and upper pharyngeal arches, the parasphenoid, the basioccipital, and the prootics. These elements were used to identify archaeological specimens from the fill of an Emergent Mississippian pit house at the Range site in St Clair County, Illinois, …

  • A Pre-Illinoian Pleistocene Fossil Assemblage from Near Connersville, Southeastern Indiana

    Open Access•Barry B Miller, Donald F Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1993

A fossil assemblage containing molluscs, ostracodes, and fish has been recovered from lacustrine sediments from near Connersville, southeastern Indiana. The reversed remanent magnetic signature of the sediments and the extent of isoleucine epimerization in molluscan shell protein indicate a pre-Illinoian age for the fossils. The fauna includes four taxa of fish, Coregonus sp., cf. Prosopium sp., cf. Thymallus arcticus, and Catostomus sp.; four ta…
