Medieval timbers in churches of the Swedish province of Västergötland
The Swedish province of Västergötland is home to around 180 churches from the Middle Ages and played an important role in the processes of Christianisation and subsequent state-building of Sweden. The roof structures of these churches act as a window to our past where we can learn information on construction dates and techniques as well as the use of local resources, such as timber. In this joint project between the National Laboratory of Wood An…
Caring for preservation - coring for prehistoric life. Revisiting 15 000 years of sedimentation at the Ageröd peatland, Southern Sweden
The Rönneholm-Ageröd peatland complex, situated in central Scania, contains numerous archaeological sites discovered since the 19th century. Two sediment sequences were obtained at the Ageröd peatland to compare the sediment stratigraphy with a previous sequence obtained in 1960 to detect any modern-day changes and to establish the Holocene environmental development in the area. To clarify the timing of ceased peat-cutting activities, dendrochron…
Old Wood in a New Light
The Old Wood in a New Light database project focuses on the digitization and accessibility of the results of dendrochronological samples analyzed and archived at four Swedish university-based tree-ring laboratories at Lund University, Stockholm University, University of Gothenburg, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Collaboration with the Environmental Archaeology Laboratory and Humlab at Umeå University enables long-term open a…
Mapping Stone Age Sites by Topographical Modelling
Casks from Gribshunden (1495) – Dendrochronology of Late Medieval Shipboard Victual Containers
Wooden casks were used extensively to transport goods in medieval Europe but have beenlargely overlooked in Scandinavian marine archaeological studies. We present a study ofcasks recovered from the Danish-Norwegian royal flagship Gribshunden, which sank inthe summer of 1495 outside Stora Ekö Island in southeastern Sweden. Duringexcavations in 2020–2021, archaeologists recovered 135 wooden staves and heads fordendrochronological analysis. Seventy-…
Early Holocene bark-stripping damages as an indicator of large herbivores
A unique assemblage consisting of 113 pine samples collected from a submerged Mesolithic landscape in the Haväng area, southern Sweden, was examined to assess the presence of large herbivores, as well as changes in wild-game population density and composition. Bark-stripping damages on prehistoric trees is an extremely underutilized source of information about past game-population dynamics, yet our analyzes of wood samples – dated to around 10 50…
Shoreline Displacement, Coastal Environments and Human Subsistence in the Hanö Bay Region during The Mesolithic
Southern Scandinavia experienced significant environmental changes during the early Holocene. Shoreline displacement reconstructions and results from several zooarchaeological studies were used to describe the environmental changes and the associated human subsistence and settlement development in the Hanö Bay region of southern Sweden during the Mesolithic. GIS-based palaeogeographic reconstructions building on shoreline displacement records fro…
A submerged Mesolithic lagoonal landscape in the Baltic Sea, south-eastern Sweden – Early Holocene environmental reconstruction and shore-level displacement based on a multiproxy approach
Shoreline displacement and human resource utilization in the southern Baltic Basin coastal zone during the early Holocene
Along parts of the Hanö Bay coast in south-eastern Sweden, remains of a submerged landscape can be found down to depths of almost 25 m b.s.l. The coastal landscape was formed during two periods of lowered water levels in the Baltic Basin: the Yoldia Sea and the Initial Littorina Sea stages. In order to reconstruct the local environment and shoreline displacement during the Yoldia Sea and Ancylus Lake stages, sediment sequences were obtained at 4.…
