RLPI Geophysical Studies 2010 – 2013: Lessons Learned
summarises results and conclusions from a series of multimethod geophysical surveys, carried out within the context of a long running landscape archaeological project, documents the hidden protohistoric settlement system of northern Calabria (Italy)
Beyond discovery: Geophysical survey for landscape management and monitoring
FDEM surveys aid prospection in wet or formerly wet lowland archaeological sites, They help monitor sites facing threats from development and climate change
Material Responses to the Great Depression in Northeast England
The Great Depression of the 1920s and 1930s was a global economic crisis, yet to understand its impacts in material terms, it is necessary to recognize that they were situated within specific local and regional contexts. This article, drawing on the work of the Leverhulme Trust-funded Landscapes of the Great Depression in the North East project, explores the impacts and responses to the Great Depression in Northeast England through an exploration…
The Archaeology of 20th-Century Factory Management: Four Factories on the Team Valley Trading Estate
This article seeks to determine whether changes in factory management during the mid-20th century can be archaeologically recognised.11 The structures examined here provide evidence for the period from the late 1930s to approximately the 1990s. The 20th century witnessed significant changes in management practice which are understood historically. In order to examine the archaeological record of these changes, archaeological and historical resear…
Tales from the outer limits: Archaeological geophysical prospection in lowland peat environments in the British Isles
In order to systematically investigate the potential of conventional near surface geophysical techniques to locate waterlogged archaeological targets in peatlands, the authors applied four conventional geophysical methods – earth resistance, ground‐penetrating radar (GPR), magnetic gradiometry and frequency domain electromagnetics (FDEM) – to four lowland peat archaeological test sites in Great Britain. In this article we demonstrate that a Neoli…
Putting the Spotlight on Small Metal Age Pottery Scatters in Northern Calabria (Italy)
This paper presents the results of an in-depth multidisciplinary restudy of small Metal Age surface scatters recorded in earlier fieldwalking surveys in northern Calabria (Italy). Guided by a stratified sampling approach based on site types and topographic positions, high-resolution surface collections at the selected sites were combined with geophysical surveys, test pits, and soil studies to investigate both archaeological deposits and the site…
Magnetic Susceptibility Detection of Small Protohistoric Sites in the Raganello Basin, Calabria (Italy)
This paper presents pilot geophysical investigations carried out in 2005–2006 by the Groningen Institute of Archaeology in northern Calabria, Italy. The aim of this work was to find out if and how surface magnetic susceptibility (MS) measurements might be of use to correct significant visibility biases in the results of earlier large‐scale systematic and intensive field‐walking, in particular for unobtrusive rural protohistoric sites. It was foun…
Minor Centres in the Pontine Plain: The Cases of Forum Appii and Ad Medias
Although both the urban and rural landscapes of Roman Italy have received due attention in current debates on the Roman economy, this is less true for the highly variable group of intermediate sites, here conveniently labelled as ‘minor centres’, and their role within economic networks. This contribution focuses attention on two such sites, Forum Appii and Ad Medias , situated in the Pontine plain (Lazio, central Italy) along the Via Appia. After…
Archaeological geophysical prospection in peatland environments: Case studies and suggestions for future practice
Peatland environments, in contrast to 'dry-land' sites, preserve organic material, including anthropogenic objects, because they are anaerobic, and are therefore of great importance to archaeology.Peat also preserves macro-and micro-paleoenvironmental evidence and is the primary resource for understanding past climates and ecology.Archaeological sites often lie within or at the base of wet, deep, homogenous peat rendering them invisible to surfac…
Situating the Greenham Archaeology: An Autoethnography of a Feminist Project
This paper discusses an ongoing investigation into the material cultural legacy and memory of the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp. Using an autoethnographic approach it explores how a project at Greenham became an exercise in feminist practice, which aimed to stay close to the spirit and ethics of its subject of study, the women-only, feminist space of Greenham. We draw on principles from feminist and post-positivist scholarship to argue for t…
