  • Future directions for sustainable consumption research and action

Open Access•H Rau, Marlyne Sahakian et al.•ARTICLE•Consumption and Society•2026

This article identifies ten priorities for future sustainable consumption research and action, prioritising questions of (in)justice. • Developing a minifesta for effective academic-activist collaboration in the context of the climate emergency

Open Access•Duncan P Mclaren, Christine Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2024

Justice-oriented climate activism is proliferating. Many scholars aspire to deliver research that supports activism. However, measures of impact for research evaluation and funding purposes place little weight on the use of research by activists. Here we consider how academics and academia might effectively support and enable climate activism. We report outcomes from a series of online deliberative workshops involving both activists and academics…

  • New insights into thermal comfort sufficiency in dwellings

Open Access•Geoffrey Van Moeseke, Denis De Grave et al.•ARTICLE•Buildings and Cities•2024•References: 6

Domestic heating is a major contributor to energy consumption and must be minimised to achieve climate targets. Building on the concept of addressing the distinct heating needs of individuals and buildings separately, the Slowheat project implemented a three-year transdisciplinary real-world laboratory focusing on adaptive heating practices. This initiative involved 23 households in Brussels, Belgium, in a collaborative exploration of the suffici…

  • Challenging social norms to recraft practices: A Living Lab approach to reducing household energy use in eight European countries

    Open Access•Marlyne Sahakian, H Rau et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2021•Cited by: 24•References: 28

ENERGISE is the first large-scale European effort to reduce household energy use through a change initiative that adopted a ‘living lab’ approach informed by social practice theory. Two challenges were introduced to 306 households in eight countries: to lower indoor temperatures and to reduce laundry cycles. This contribution demonstrates the usefulness of a practice-centered design that takes habits and routines as an entry point for understandi…

  • Transforming innovation for decarbonisation? Insights from combining complex systems and social practice perspectives

Open Access•Nicola Labanca, Ângela Guimarães Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 17

Technological innovations seem to be among the great promises for achieving the urgent modernisation of economies towards carbon-neutrality. Ranging from fusion energy, bio-based fuels, carbon capture and storage to PV panels and so-called smart energy systems, plenty of technologies promise to reduce use or greenhouse gas emissions of carbon based energy sources. This techno-centric view disregards to a great extent that technological change aff…

  • Transformations énergétiques sous contrainte écologique forte

Alain Nadaï, Grégoire Wallenborn•ARTICLE•Multitudes•2020•Cited by: 2

  • Making "Sustainable Consumption" Matter: The Indoor Microclimate as Contested Cultural Artifact

    Open Access•Marlyne Sahakian, Henrike Rau et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Sociology•2020•Cited by: 8•References: 34

This article demonstrates how a cultural reading of consumption that focuses on the meaning and materiality of domestic indoor microclimates can contribute to conceptual developments in the field of practice theory that refocus attention on cultural patterns, including prevailing norms and prescriptions regarding indoor temperature and thermal comfort. Drawing on evidence collected during a research-led change initiative that encouraged people to…
