  • Scandinavian Late‐medieval Elite Architecture on Land and at Sea. A Spatial Study of the Castle Glimmingehus and the Warship Gribshunden

    Open Access•Martin Hansson, Brendan Foley•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•2026

THIS PAPER COMPARES THE SOCIAL USE OF SPACE in late-medieval castles and warships. The main case studies used are the noble castle of Glimmingehus in present-day Sweden, built 1499 to 1505, and the royal warship Gribshunden, in use from the mid-1480s until its sinking in 1495; we also refer to the later and fully excavated warships Mary Rose and Vasa. Both castles and warships are examples of elite architecture, structures in which different soci…

  • Late Medieval Shipboard Artillery on a Northern European Carvel

Open Access•Brendan Foley, Kay Douglas Smith et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2025•References: 17

We present the artillery of a well-preserved late medieval Danish-Norwegian carvel warship, Gribshunden. Probably built in the Netherlands in 1484, the ship served King Hans until sinking in June 1495. Of its original 50 or more guns, elements of 11 have been recovered and digitally recreated, and more remain on the wreck. Investigation of this site provides insights into the development of shipboard artillery in the late 15th century, the crucia…

    Open Access•Martin Hansson•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•References: 13

This paper examines how agents inscribed their persona in buildings during the Renaissance in Scania in present-day Sweden. Through an analysis of stone tablets and timber beams with inscriptions, images, and dates, questions of identity and individuality are highlighted. The objects were often placed above doors in noble country residences or in buildings belonging to the urban elite. The paper discusses who was able to see and understand the me…

  • Invisible and Ignored

    Open Access•Martin Hansson, Pia Nilsson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 8

This paper aims to discuss subalterns in different social environments in Sweden. The potential of archaeological studies of landless subalterns in rural and urban areas are shown though a number of case studies. It is argued that archaeology can show the multivocality of the lives of the subalterns, in the same way as it shows how the subalterns organized their daily life. This is done through the use of the concepts of matterscape, powerscape, …

  • Stone Tablets, Memorial Texts and Agency in Late-Medieval Scandinavian Castles

    Martin Hansson•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 17

THIS PAPER EXPLORES how noblemen expressed themselves in late-medieval Scandinavian castles, in the buildings and in the landscape. The focus is on decorated stone tablets with coats of arms and memorial texts found on the castle walls, but the landscape setting of the castles is also discussed. The examples considered here are Glimmingehus in Scania, in present-day southern Sweden, and Olofsborg in eastern Finland — both erected in the late 15th…
