  • Late-Holocene diatom community response to climate driven chemical changes in a small, subarctic lake, Northwest Territories, Canada

    Open Access•Paul B Hamilton, Scott J Hutchinson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•References: 2

The paleolimnological record of diatoms and climate, spanning the last 2800 years, was investigated in a small subarctic lake (Pocket Lake) that from AD 1948 to 2004 was contaminated by gold smelting waste. An age-depth model was constructed using a combination of 210 Pb, 14 C, and tephra to determine a 2800 year history of lake ontogeny (natural aging), biological diversity, and regional climate variability. Diatoms form six strong paleoecologic…

  • The eos project: Modelling Upper Palaeolithic social change

Jim Doran, Mike Palmer et al.•CHAPTER•Simulating Societies•2018

The objective of the EOS project (Doran 1982, 1992) is to investigate the growth of social complexity and, in particular, to formulate and experiment with an abstract computational version of an informal model proposed by Paul Mellars (1985) of the growth of social complexity in the Upper Palaeolithic period in southwestern France. At the heart of the project is the use of the concepts and techniques of distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) (…

  • The EOS project: Integrating two models of Palaeolithic social change

    Open Access•Jim Doran, Mike Palmer•CHAPTER•Artificial Societies•2006

A previous report on the EOS project (Doran et al, 1994) described the development of a specialized software testbed, and the design, implementation and testing within it of a simple computational version of the Mellars model for the growth of unprecedented social complexity in the Upper Palaeolithic period of south-western Europe (Mellars 1985)

  • Towards Developing Kentucky's Landscape Change Maps

Demetrio Zourarakis, Susan Carson Lambert et al.•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2003

The Kentucky Landscape Snapshot Project, a NASA-funded project, was established to provide a first baseline land cover/land use map for Kentucky. Through this endeavor, change detection will be institutionalized, thus aiding in decision-making at the local, state, and federal planning levels. 2002 Landsat 7 imagery was classified following an Anderson Level III scheme, providing an enhancement over the 1992 USGS National Land Cover Data Set. Also…
