The Targumim and Their Value for Textual Criticism of the Hebrew Bible
This chapter discusses the Targumim (the plural of Targum) as traditional Jewish translations of the Hebrew Bible that display the distinctive influence of rabbinic Judaism. Targumim were composed from the first part of the first millennium (e.g., Targum Onqelos and Targum Jonathan) till roughly the first quarter of the second millennium (e.g., Targum Pseudo-Jonathan and Targum Chronicles). The Targumim as a group, but even more so the earlier Ta…
The Evil Inclination in the Targums to the Writings
The purpose of this chapter is to examine if and how the Targums to the Writings make use of the concept of the Evil Inclination ( yeṣer hara‘ ). Research on the Evil Inclination has focused mainly on texts from the Talmud and Midrash – and rightly so. It is worthwhile, though, including the corpus of Aramaic Targums in discussions about rabbinic concepts, because these contain valuable information about Jewish interpretations of Scripture compil…
Towards a More Precise Understanding of Pseudo-Jonathan’s Origins
Many have assumed that Targum Pseudo-Jonathan (TgPsJ) is the product of first millennium Palestine. This study presents evidence suggesting that TgPsJ is neither from the first millennium, nor from Palestine. TgPsJ displays an unawareness of some basic facts with regard to the geography of the land of Israel, which makes the argument for its author being a native of Palestine unpersuasive. Excerpts from Even Bochan , a twelfth-century Hebrew lexi…
Targum Chronicles and Its Place Among the Late Targums
Targum Chronicles and Its Place Among the Late Targums heralds a paradigm shift in the understanding of many of the Jewish-Aramaic translations of individual biblical books and their origins. Leeor Gottlieb provides the most extensive study of Targum Chronicles to date, leading to conclusions that challenge long-accepted truisms with regard to the origin of Targums. This book's trail of evidence convincingly points to the composition of Targums i…
The Hebrew Vorlage of Targum Chronicles
Careful study of the Aramaic text of Targum Chronicles reveals several apparent differences between the Hebrew source text upon which the targumist relied and the Masoretic text of Chronicles. This article is an attempt to identify and document these differences, resulting in four categories: differences in consonantal orthography, differences in vocalization, differences in syntactic division and the degree of conformity with Ketib / Qere . Susp…
Composition of Targums after the Decline of Aramaic as a Spoken Language
The eighth century is the latest many scholars feel comfortable with for the use of Aramaic as a living language, before it was supplanted by Arabic. Therefore, clearly late Targums were usually dated circa the eighth century. However, persuasive arguments have been made in the past generation for a later dating regarding some Targums. This justifies a re-evaluation of the assumption that an Aramaic speaking environment is necessary for the conti…
