Digital Twins at the City and Town Scale
The last ten years have seen great strides in digital archaeological and heritage outputs, particularly with the use of three-dimensional (3D) digital documentation becoming increasingly commonplace. Methods that widen participation and increase access have led to valuable community-scale documentation, from artefacts to landscapes. As part of this workflow, the Visualising Heritage team at the University of Bradford, UK, and international collab…
He Went Down to Joppa and Found a Ship Going to Tarshish’ (Jonah 1
Recent excavations of Tel Yafo (Jaffa), Israel, underscore its role as an historically important Mediterranean port. In 2014, the Ioppa Maritima Project conducted a geological investigation determining that from ca. 5000–2000 years BP, a small estuarine system existed east and north of Tel Yafo that could have served as a harbour. The marine re-entrant formed through sea-level rise and flooding of a small valley, and the stream mouth was probably…

The Saronic Harbors Archaeological Research Project (Sharp)
This article describes the initial phase of investigations at Kalamianos, a recently discovered Mycenaean coastal settlement on the Saronic Gulf in the southeastern Corinthia. To date 50 buildings and 120 rooms of Late Helladic IIIB date have been identified at the site, which is unique for the excellent preservation of aboveground architectural remains. Beyond the site is another large Mycenaean architectural complex, as well as small fortified …
The Palaeo-Environmental Contexts of Three Possible Phoenician Anchorages in Portugal
The 2002 Joint Expedition of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology and the Centro Nacional de Arqueologia Náutica e Subaquática examined Phoenician maritime involvement in Portugal, combining archaeological, geological and geophysical surveys of former coastal sites—Santa Olaia, Abul and Castro Marim—where previous excavations have uncovered Phoenician remains. Significant geomorphic evolution of bay-head delta and estuarine settings masks the fa…
Life and Death at a Port in Roman Greece
This article summarizes the goals, methods, and discoveries of the Kenchreai Cemetery Project (2002-2006), an interdisciplinary study of burial grounds at the eastern port of Corinth during the Roman Empire, from the mid-1st to 7th century A.D. Work has concentrated on the main cemetery of cist graves and chamber tombs immediately north of the harbor on the Koutsongila ridge. The contextual study of the geology, topography, architecture, epitaphs…
Geological and geophysical investigations in the Roman cemetery at Kenchreai (Korinthia), Greece
The Kenchreai Cemetery Project (KCP) comprises an interdisciplinary archaeological research team that is exploring a major cemetery of Roman date in southern Greece. The cemetery is located on the Koutsongila Ridge just north of the ancient harbour of Kenchreai, the prosperous eastern port of Corinth. Surface remains that have been visible for centuries or exposed by looting include chamber tombs, cist graves and architecture. In 2004 KCP conduct…
Holocene Paleocoastal Reconstruction and its Relationship to Marco Gonzalez, Ambergris Caye, Belize
Holocene stratigraphy on southern Ambergris Caye, Belize, records a sea-level rise over the last 6100 years, accompanied by major environmental changes and coastal reconfiguration that affected habitation at the Marco Gonzalez Maya site. At the time of initial occupation of the site at about 2100 B.P., sea level was about 30 cm below present stand, and the area was a relatively large, hospitable island surrounded by shallow lagoons open to the se…
