The historiography of the Aegean Bronze Age is one preoccupied with the elite or upper echelons of its societies, usually identified through wealthy finds and large-scale structures. This is the case for at least three reasons.Firstly, it is a field with origins in nineteenth-century Victorian historical pursuits. It is therefore a field which privileged the elite and was populated by scholars of elite classes (McEnroe 1995;Gere 2009;Sherratt 2009)…

In the tradition of people’s history, the following is a hypothetical reconstruction of the life of a textile worker from Final‐palatial Knossos (c.1375–1050 BC). This reconstruction is built upon a broad array of archaeological, philological, ceramic, ethnographic, palaeobotanical and osteological studies. Although hypothetical, this data‐based, multidisciplinary reconstruction is offered as one way to get at lived experience of the non‐elite, a…

  • Dance in Bronze Age Greece

    Open Access•Senta C German, Senta German•ARTICLE•Dance Research Journal•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The identification of images of dance from antiquity is very difficult given the limitations of ancient forms of representation, the remoteness of the action itself, and the obscurity of its cultural contexts. These problems are magnified when one considers images of dance from preliterate cultures or those in which written language offers little insight. The following is an investigation into the representation of dance dating to the latter half…

This paper discusses the photographs published by Sir Arthur Evans of the Bronze Age site of Knossos on Crete and gives special attention to those that exhibit evidence of alteration. The altered images are divided into three categories: Retouched for Clarity, Reconstruction, and Falsification. It is argued that although Evans most frequently altered excavation photographs for benign purposes, he also occasionally changed images of the site and a…

Senta C German•BOOK•PERFORMANCE, POWER AND THE ART OF…•2005

In this volume, the author investigates the sudden appearance of the human form in the visual remains of the Aegean Bronze Age at the beginning of the historical period referred to as Late Minoan. Found in a range of media, the beauty of the images of men and women, as well as the great skill of their execution emerging so suddenly, called out for exploration. The study attempts to get at the specific social meanings of performances (primarily bu…
