Evaluating inventive activity: The cost of nineteenth-century UK patents and the fallibility of renewal data
It has long been recognized that counting patents offers a poor gauge of the extent and value of inventive activity, not least because the quality of patented inventions varies enormously. The Schankerman-Pakes model provides a valuable alternative gauge that utilizes the data from renewal fees which are regularly paid to keep a patent in force. This article suggests, however, that the model's application to nineteenth-century UK patents may unde…
Making waves: The Royal Navy's management of invention and innovation in steam shipping, 1815–1832 1
This paper explores the sources of invention and innovation in steam shipping, the distribution of funding and risk between the state and the private sector, and the Royal Navy's management of innovation, during the experimental period of steam power's adoption at sea. It identifies two intersecting channels through which steam‐related innovations reached the Royal Navy. First, “packages” of innovations were embedded in the marine engines that we…
The Costs of Eighteenth Century Steam Engines
The Smethwick Engine
The Smethwick Engine is now displayed in the Birmingham Museum of Science and Industry. Initially preserved in 1897, this canal pumping engine by Boulton and Watt is the oldest working steam engine in the world. Recent research on the engine has involved documents, field work and finally the excavation of the original engine house in Smethwick. A number of safety problems arose during the excavation and these were discussed and appropriate action…
