Engraved Limestone Block from Švédův stůl Cave, Czech Republic
Evidence of post- Eneolithic human activities at the Hlinsko – Nad Zbružovým site
The Hlinsko – Nad Zbružovým site is considered one of the most significant Moravian locations for the study of the Middle Eneolithic period. Earlier research provided valuable insights into the cultural and technological aspects of this period. During a re- examination of metal artefacts from the site, it was discovered that one of the artefacts (spiral) was made of tin bronze, thus not of an Eneolithic dating. The tin bronze material of the find…
Multidisciplinary Analysis of the Engraved Pebble From the Magdalenian Horizon of the Open-Air Site Hošťálkovice II – Hladový vrch (Czech Republic)
Re-excavation of Discarded Deposits from Švédův stůl Cave (Moravian Karst, Czech Republic) and their Archaeological Potential
Many caves worldwide, including those with significant archaeological deposits, have attracted excavators since the end of the 19th c. This has often resulted in caves being partially, or entirely, emptied of sediments. The ‘coarse’ methodology used during earlier excavations has resulted in many finds being missed, which usually resulted in their discard onto nearby spoil heaps along with the sediments. Švédův stůl Cave, in the southern part of …
Vodní kovové depozitum doby popelnicových polí z Prosiměřic na Znojemsku: K otázkám vztahů depozit, sídel a vod
The Prosiměřice 2 metal hoard was discovered during archaeological rescue excavation in 2021 on the northern edge of the cadastre, where it was located in the floodplain of the River Jevišovka below the groundwater level. In addition to nine ingots and a broken-off sprue, the hoard contains two socketed axes, which date the find to the later stage of the Middle Danube Urnfield Culture. All the artefacts of the hoard were subjected to material com…
Hoard with a miner’s pick from Krtely in South Bohemia: On the question of the relations of hoards, imports and burial mounds of the Urnfield period
This article presents a hoard of 27 metal artefacts and fragments of one ceramic vessel from the South Bohemian site of Krtely, dated to the earlier phase of the Late Bronze Age (Br D – Ha A1). Two exceptional phenomena are associated with the hoard. The first is its placement in a burial mound, and the second is the presence of two fragments of a broken miner's pick, analogous to those found in the salt mines of Hallstatt. In addition to typolog…
New Hellenistic Coin Finds from the Baysun and Kugitang Piedmonts, Southern Uzbekistan (season 2018)
The article presents assemblage of Seleucid and Greco-Bactrian coins found by the Czech-Uzbek archaeological expedition in the frame of a sampling metal detector survey in the upper reaches of Sherabad Darya, from the sites of the Darband Wall, Daganajam, Kurganzol and Iskandar Tepa in 2018. Sixteen specimens, of both silver and copper alloys, which were determined including a very rare Seleukos I (?) coin are assessed not only from the numismati…
Senorady/Mohelno – „Boleniska“: Strategická poloha v krajině s palimpsestem pravěkého osídlení
The landscapes of the Mohelno settlement microregion are mostly gently undulating, but also dissected by two deeply incised river valleys – the Oslava River valley in the north and the Jihlava River valley in the south. The western boundary is formed by Zelený kopec (491 m above sea level, while the eastern boundary is marked by Biskoupský kopec (397.3 m above sea level) and Vodanský kopec (397.5 m above sea level). This microregion was settled a…
Kramolín hillfort revisited. Archaeological potential of a site flooded for 45 years
The temporary lowering of the water level in Dalešice Reservoir for maintenance in the autumn of 2021 created an opportunity to conduct an archaeological investigation of the Kramolín hillfort – a site permanently flooded since the 1970s. A small group of archaeologists reached the shore of Kramolín island by boat and performed the survey with metal detectors and GPS hand held devices. This survey produced a large collection of lithic artefacts, …
Medieval Mining Centre of Buchberg in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Metal Production in the Kingdom of Bohemia (13th–14th Centuries)
The study presents the results of a wide range of research approaches and surveys of the defunct mining centre at Buchberg in the region of Havlíčkův Brod, which was involved in silver production in the 13th and 14th centuries. Burchberg is exceptional in its size and well-advanced community infrastructure. Its significance is also reflected in written sources. Surveys and trial diggings focused on the residential area, and especially on the adjo…
Kučeravá Starohradišťanka: K umění a řemeslu na mladolaténské Moravě
A fragment of a bronze figurine discovered recently at the Staré Hradisko oppidum, which represents a female with her arms on the hips, stands out from similar artefacts from a stylistic and technological point of view. The present paper analyses the artefact from the stylistic point of view by setting it into the context of other anthropomorphic statuettes from the Middle Danube area and the technological standpoint utilising microscopy and elem…
The archaeology of overburden: Method within the madness at Švédův Stůl, Czech Republic
Late Medieval Magistrate’s Sword from the Collections of Buchlov State Castle
The collections of Buchlov State Castle include, among other things, a richly decorated late medieval long-sword that can be, based on its overall character, including maker’s marks on its blade, reliably interpreted as a so-called magistrate’s sword made around the turn of the 16th century in Passau, Bavaria. This article discusses the nature of its decoration in comparison with other similar preserved Central European magistrates’ swords of Pas…
New metal and glass finds from the Late Iron Age in South Moravia (CZ). The contribution of citizen science to knowledge of the La Tene settlement structure in the Břeclav Region
The ‘Celts Beneath the Pálava Hills’ exhibition was installed at the end of the summer of 2020 at the Regional Museum in Mikulov. The museum prepared the exhibition in cooperation with the Moravian Museum and the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Brno. Along with other unique exhibits, an assemblage of 70 metal artefacts stored in Dolní Dunajovice in the study collection of the Research Centre for the Roman and Great Migr…
Dva mimořádné hroby z laténského pohřebiště v Rousínově
Development-led excavation in Rousínov in 2017 uncovered a La Tène cemetery in which 30 graves were excavated. Out of these, two exceptional graves, a rich female inhumation and a warrior’s cremation grave, are discussed in detail in this paper. In addition to typological determination of artefacts, the paper includes the results of a survey and conservation work on metal artefacts and anthropological analysis. The inhumation burial of a gracile …
Preliminary report of the 2019 excavation at Švédův Stůl Cave in the Moravian Karst
Švédův Stůl Cave in the Moravian Karst has been excavated several times since Martin Kříž started the first excavation in 1886. Two parts of the site were re-excavated in 2019. The primary aim was to conduct classical as well as innovative and experimental sedimentological and geoarchaeological investigations of sediments from the discarded spoil heap outside the cave entrance (trench C–D). Intact sediments with a small number of lithic artefacts…
