Introduction: Rethinking primitivisms in the modern art of Southeast Asia
This essay introduces the special issue Rethinking Primitivisms in the Modern Art of Southeast Asia. We argue that the concept of 'primitivism' allows us to address an uneasy hierarchy of artist to subject, self to other, that arises in certain works of modern art in Southeast Asia, and to situate such artworks within an art-historical genealogy.
