Integrated terrestrial and submarine geomorphological mapping provides insights into the Quaternary landscape evolution of the Gulf of Corinth, Greece
This study presents a 1:150,000 scale geomorphological map of the Gulf of Corinth (central Greece), integrating terrestrial and submarine landforms. The Gulf, an asymmetric WNW-ESE half-graben, is one of the tectonically most active areas in the eastern Mediterranean, with an uplifting southern flank and a downward flexed northern one. A multidisciplinary approach, combining field surveys and high-resolution seafloor bathymetry, was used to map t…
Influences of sea level changes and the South Asian Monsoon on southern Red Sea oceanography over the last 30 ka
The southern Red Sea is a key region for investigating the effect of climate forces on a semi-closed basin. Detailed micropaleontological (planktic foraminifera) and isotopic (δ 18 Ο, δ 13 C) analyses along with reconstructions of sea surface temperature and salinity on a sediment core from the Farasan banks revealed the imprints of sea level changes and the South Asian Monsoon on the area. Comparison with surrounding records provided insights on…
Searching for Neolithic sites in the Bay of Kiladha, Greece
Since the excavations at Franchthi Cave in the 1960s and 1970s, the possibility of finding a submerged Neolithic site in the Bay of Kiladha has been discussed. Initial research, based on marine geophysical survey and core sampling, brought contrasted results. Starting in 2012, new parts of the Bay were investigated, using different techniques and improved methods, such as geological-geophysical survey, further core sampling (including the finding…

Searching for Ancient Shipwrecks in the Aegean Sea: The Discovery of Chios and Kythnos Hellenistic Wrecks with the Use of Marine Geological-Geophysical Methods
This paper presents the results of two deep-water archaeological surveys recently conducted in the Aegean Sea, and the advantages of using conventional marine geological techniques in deep-water archaeology. Two Hellenistic wrecks were discovered: one in the Chios-Oinousses strait at 70 m, was a concentration of over 400 amphoras in a 1.5-m-high, high-backscattering, morphological high; the second, west of Kythnos island, at 495 m, consisted of a…
