Facts and Factoids in the Early History of the Opium Poppy
In the biomedical literature, the belief that the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) is a supposed Sumerian “plant of joy” persists. In this article, I review the mounting archaeological evidence showing that P. somniferum was domesticated in Europe during the Neolithic Age, probably because of the nutritional properties of its seeds. During the Late Bronze Age, the plant was ascribed symbolic meanings within religious and possibly ritual functions…
Validity of the Italian Version of the Severity of Dependence Scale (SDS) for Nicotine Dependence in Smokers Intending to Quit
The objective was to test the psychometric properties of an Italian version of the Severity of Dependence Scale, a five-item measure designed to assess the compulsive dimension of drug dependence. 635 smokers enrolled in a tobacco dependence treatment program served as the participants. The Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence was used as a comparative measure. Dimensionality of the Severity of Dependence Scale and the Fagerström Test for Nico…
The Rules of Drug Taking
In spite of declared intentions to maintain control of drinking, we have cues that during the symposium enough wine was ingested to get intoxicated. Hence, it was widely debated how much wine could be safety drunk, and the conclusion was that it was a matter of individual endurance. Apparently, elders were less prone to wine-induced loss of rationality and control. In conclusion, the Ancients were aware of potential dangers of wine and that its c…
The Rules of Drug Taking
The loss of control, the misjudgment of events, and the lack of vigilance were among the effects of drunkenness that the Ancients perceived as being particularly harmful. The sexual behavior was mainly affected by the loss of control: rape, incest, and fulfillment of a tragic oracle were examples of the ruinous outcome of drunkenness. Excessive drinking, besides the intervention of a good, was considered responsible for a temporary loss of judgme…
The Rules of Drug Taking
Besides fertility, poppies have been used to symbolize sleep, night, and death. Consistent with the agrarian origin of their ritual use, poppies also became a symbol of reincarnation. Several literary and iconographic sources, in particular of the early Roman imperial age, are here interpreted as evidence that poppy derivatives were ingested during mystery rites. The reversible narcotic effects of poppy derivatives should have allowed a "realisti…
