  • Visual acuity in a national sample of 10 year old children

    Sarah Stewart-Brown, N Butler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 2

The prevalence of defects of visual acuity among the 10 year old children in the 1970 birth cohort was 22.1%, but only in one third of these children was the defect more severe than 6/9. Defects were more common among girls. The relation of defects to social class was complex. Comparison with data collected on the children of the 1958 cohort when they were 11 years old suggests that although the prevalence of 6/9 visual acuity has remained consta…

  • Family type and accidents in preschool children

    J Wadsworth, Ioanna Burnell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1983•Cited by: 15•References: 8

Children living in single-parent families or stepfamilies were found to be more likely to suffer accidental injuries in their first five years of life than children living with two natural parents. Frequent household moves, low maternal age, and perceived poor behaviour in the child were all more strongly associated with overall accident rates than family type, and these disadvantages were more common in atypical families. Family type appeared to…

  • Breast feeding, eczema, asthma, and hayfever

    Brent Taylor, J Wadsworth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1983•Cited by: 2•References: 17

The association of breast feeding with rates of atopic illness during the first five years of life was assessed in a national study of 13 135 children studied during the first week and at age 5 years. Eczema was reported more often in children who had been breast fed; this relationship persisted even after allowance was made for social and family factors influencing the likelihood both of breast feeding and of eczema; the other factors most signi…

  • Recent Literature

Stanley Tresidder, Michel Ange-Laribe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1912

Some Recent Advances in Syphilis and Gonorrhoea.-Threeadvances of great practical importance have been made in connection with syphilis: (i) the discovery of the specific organism of the disease by Schaudinn in I1905 has made possible the early diagnosis by the ultra-microscope at least a fortnight before any secondary symptoms appear; (2) Ehrlich's salvarsan has proved to be the most powerful weapon for the cure of syphilis, but has not been use…
