Satan in the Pulpit
This essay places one of the most important events of recent Christian history, the First Great Awakening, into context with another, seemingly unrelated experience: the end of Scottish witch hunting. Beyond the fact that many enemies of the revivals labeled them as demonic, the ordinary people who participated in them frequently encountered Satan, sometimes in physical form, who tried to win their souls as he had done with witches and demoniacs …

Human Memory
First-Letter Clues in the Retrieval of Proper Names from Long-Term Memory
Each of four experiments required retrieval of proper names from long-term memory. In Exps. I and II a picture of a well-known person was presented on each of a series of discrete trials and S was to say, as rapidly as possible, the surname of the person pictured. on each trial of Exps. III and IV S was given a book title, or titles, and asked to say the surname of the author. In some of the conditions the first letter of the target name was prov…
Models for optimizing the learning process
This paper is concerned with showing how certain instructional problems can be reformulated as problems in the mathematical theory of optimization.A common instructional paradigm is outlined and a notational system is proposed which allows the paradigm to be restated as a multi-stage decision process with an explicit mathematical learning model.embedded within it.The notion of an optimal stimulus presentation strategy is introduced and some probl…
An Automated System for Discrete-Trial Research with Animals
A system has been constructed for the study of two- and three-choice behavior in animals, using either a free operant or discrete-trial procedure. An IBM-026 card punch is utilized to automatically program stimulus and reinforcement events, and to record choices and choice latencies. Eight Ss may be run simultaneously in the apparatus
Markov Learning Models for Multiperson Interactions
Decision Making by Children as a Function of Amount of Reinforcement
This study deals with the effect of varying amounts of reinforcement in a two-choice decision making experiment of the Humphreys type. The situation involves prediction by children of a binary sequence of events. The data are analyzed in terms of a linear learning model of the type developed by Estes and Burke ( 1953) and Bush and Mosteller ( 1955). The experimental situation involves a series of discrete trials. Each trial begins with the onset …
