Emotions through Time
This volume is the first to explore ancient and Byzantine Greek emotions from a comparative and synoptic perspective. A distinguished international cast of 17 authors deploys the methodologies of Classics, Byzantine Studies, and emotion history to uncover the complex interactions between ancient and Byzantine emotionology. Its wide-ranging chapters shed new light on the Byzantine emotional universe and its impact on medieval and early modern cult…
“A Hand of Ivory”
This paper takes its cue from the recent interest in materiality and “things” in the field of Byzantine studies, to explore the role of objects in evoking being moved. Christmas presents for John Tzetzes
The corpus of Tzetzes’ epistles edited by Pietro Luigi Leone in 1972 includes 107 letters. The short missive is addressed to one Konstantinos Phyteianos. The present paper provides the first edition and translation into English of this letter, analysing its authorship and contents as well as its rhetorical fun…

The paper provides for the first time a full-fledged analysis of the structure and compositional principles sustaining John Tzetzes’ Chiliades or Historiai . The article is divided into three sections. The first focuses on the developments of commentary literature in late twelfth-century Byzantium, showing how exegesis is used to textualize the authorial self and create autobiographical narratives. The second delves into the purpose of the work a…

The Tale of a Dream
Feeling the rhythm of the waves
In September 1438 John Eugenikos decided to quit the council of Ferrara and sail back to Constantinople. Off Italy’s Adriatic coast his vessel experienced a terrible shipwreck, whereby many of John’s fellow-passengers perished. John decided then to retell his almost deadly experience in a thanks-giving logos , allegedly compiled on the basis of notes written down soon after the shipwreck. The logos stands out as a unique document in the landscape…
